Frankfurt or Mainz

We are thinking of driving to Germnay for end of May half term. We are planning to drive to Munich and thought we would spend the first two nights part way. My husband would like to go to Frankfurt but I thought Mainz might be a better option. We have a 15 year old and a 12 year old. We will be staying in Cologne on the way back, so wanted to go somewhere different on the way out. Could anyone offer advice?

We spent a day and night in Mainz in November and very much enjoyed it.

We have spent several days (no overnights) in Frankfurt enroute to somewhere else. I am sure there is a lot to see and do but it is not a city that entices us to linger.

It depends on what you want to see. Both cities offer a variety of sightseeing options, so you kind of need to decide which ones you want to see the most.

Mainz has the 1000 year old cathedral, St. Stephens with the Chagall windows, the Gutenburg museum, and the Isis temple ruins, as well as other museums and some Roman ruins. The largest being the ampitheater next to one of the S-bahn stops.

Frankfurt has dozens of museums, the Kaiserdom where the Emperors were elected and crowned, a rich Jewish history, the Paulskirch - site of the 1st German parliament in 1848, and skyscrapers of course. Lots of farmers markets as well as the Klein Markt Halle, which is an indoor market. If you want older buildings, the neighborhood of Höchst has lots of half-timbered buildings and one of the oldest churches in Germany, the Justinus church. Much of this old town sits up on the city walls, and there is a small schloss surrounded by a dry moat.
