You don't really need a tour company! You can research what you want to see, using this site, other sites and guidebooks. Then you can plan your own trip, tailoring it to your time schedule and interests. You can save LOTS of money and it will be personalized, too.

We did a tour of the Alpine countries, September 2009, with Globus. Trafalgar also does practically the same itinerary. Both were 15 or 16 days. We picked one tour because of the departure date, otherwise it's 6 of one and half dozen of the other. One tour was a few hundred dollars less than the other(plus air fare) For the most recent prices, you can check their web site. Insight is the higher end, Globus and Trafalgar are about the same, while Cosmos is the lower end(and would not recommend it).

In the pass 6 years, we took 4 tours of Europe. With each tour, at the end, we spent 1 week at the last destination. The flight is paid for, and the only thing you have ito pay s the hotel. In every case we moved hotels, as most of them are not centrally located. You can check that on Google Maps.

The itinerary is Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Villach, St Moritz, Lugano, Zermatt Lucerne or Geneva, and many other places along the way. The problem with any tour is that you sometimes get up early in the morning and it's go go go. In many places it's "look at that" and there it was. You have quite a few "free afternoon", but that can be fine.

If you do it on your own, it's cheaper. However, we no longer want the hassle(planning, reservations, transportation schedules...). When we were younger, we did it ourselves. But we never did such long itineraries. For example, we rented an apartment in central Vienna for 3 weeks, and made day trips from there. We did the same thing in Spain for 1 month, and had time to visit Morocco for 1 week.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Comaje

I checked Trafalgar(brochure code TTEUCA13F), and the itinerary has changed --- except for Munich, Germany is out and so is Vienna. However, they spend more time in certain interesting new places, such as Chamonix, the mountain train ride, and Zurich.

Globus(brochure code ZF) is exactly the same as we did. The prices of both tours are practically the same. I could not find the hotels to determine their locations, so perhaps they are listed in the catalogues.

Above after "Search in", type: globus tours. You will find 6 posts which should be of interest, especially concerning "guaranteed" or "definite" departure dates.
