Restaurant for NYE

Hi all,

Me and my partner are going to Berlin for New Years this year, arriving 28th Dec for 4 nights. I'm hoping you can suggest a nice restaurant for us on the evening of NY before we head out to enjoy the celebrations at Brandenburger Tor.

We don't want to eat somewhere where we have to eat from a set "New Years" special menu, neither of us are in to having 3 courses so would rather eat somewhere that we can just select a good main course from a restaurants usual menu, at a reasonable price.

I would also like to be within walking distance of Brandenburger Tor so that we can walk off our food before joining the party!

Our favourite type of food is probably Italian or Spanish (I know we're in Germany and obviously we will be keen to try German and other cuisine during our stay but would rather stick to something we know for this evening).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks!

As will we.

Our plan is to have our main meal earlier in the day so we can just relax and graze the food stalls around the Brandenburger Tor area.

That is a difficult question since I have no idea yet which of the restaurants around the Brandenburg Gate area will offer a NYE special or not. They probably don't know themselves by now.

But if you find one that does not, make sure to book a table well in advance, because it will get very crowded in this particular area.

Point is, if you want to join the big party, you will have to bee there well in advance (last year there were about 1,000,000 people around to celebrate).

Otherwise you might not even get close to the area (because the area has already been closed by police or security). This means there won't be time for dinner at all.

I suggest that if you want to be part of the big crowd, you put on warm clothes, go there in the afternoon and have your dinner at one of the food stands.

Other option would be, you book a table in a nice restaurant somewhere else in town.

Good luck!

These are incompatible wishes, and as always, leitstrahl gives knowledgeable advice. If you want to have a nice dinner somewhere, have it, but then don't expect to get in on the celebrations anywhere near the Brandenburg Gate. If you want to be part of the celebrations, forget dinner in a restaurant.

There will be plenty to eat at the stands - much cheaper, and maybe even better. Berlin street food is good!

Thank you all for your responses - some really interesting comments there!!

I think a valid point has been raised that in order to enjoy the celebrations we're probably going to have to get there early, so I think we will go with the suggestions of eating early and then just grabbing some food at Bradenburger Tor.

Thanks again!

8pm should be o.k., but that is dependent on the weather.

If it is a fine day, 8pm might already be too late.

The main entrance close to the stage at Brandenburg Gate usually is the first that will be closed.

Last year all entrances had finally been closed at 11pm.

If you want to go there make sure you don't bring any:

- glass (including bottles) or breakable materials

- plastic bottles bigger than 0.5 liters capacity

- other alcoholics beverages as beer, wine or champagne

- cans

- fireworks

- sharp items

- weapons

And as they really do list it on their website:

- laserpointers

- chairs

- megaphones

- boxes

- big bags or cases and finally

- paper reels

Be sure, you will have to pass a security check point to get in.

You'll find other options here (just to give you an impression what else is going on):

Sorry, website is German only, but I think you get the point.

And I would add, be sure you enjoy being in a crowd. Once you're in, you probably won't be able to get out until it's all over.

Thanks for the usefull info.

We stay at the Abba hotel, can you tell me from there which is the best way to enter the event?

German is no problem for us to read, in Holland we teach it a bit at school.

Already found the Facebook page with also info about the event.

@JojoBreda

Easiest way would be (I guess):

Take U1 from Uhlandstrasse (direction Warschauer Strasse) to Wittenbergplatz.

Switch to U2 (same platform, direction Pankow) and go to Potsdamer Platz.

From there it is about 500 meters to walk to the party entrances.
