Customary to share tables in restaurants?

I haven't been to Germany in almost 25 years - at that time it was customary for a person eating alone to ask to share a table that had extra room ("Ist hier frei?") rather than taking up an empty table. Is that still the custom, and specifically in Berlin? Thanks.

It's normal in brauhauses where they have large beerhall tables. But not in romantic restaurants :)

You will find more of these brauhauses in Munich for example than in Berlin.

Only if all tables are taken. If there are free and unreserved tables available, it will be considered intrusive (and that's what it has always been).

Only when you can't find an empty table.
