Berlin in early December or January

My family is in Europe for a year and we're trying to see a variety of places. Unfortunately time won't allow to travel everywhere during nice months, so I'm looking at travelling to Berlin for a weekend either the beginning of Dec or mid January. Which will be more appealing weather and activity wise? Will there be much going on in prep for Christmas?

Weather is difficult to predict. Snow is morelikely in January.

If I were you I'd definitely go in December in order to get a glance at the illuminations and the various Christmas Markets.

Jan tends to be colder than Dec. Snow in Berlin is like winning the lottery but since you are from Lausanne you are not desperately waiting for the snow to come I guess. *g

I agree with the others what the weather is concerned.

I would recommend going in December. Due to all the Christmas decoration and lights the city looks much nicer even when the day itself is grey. You'll also have the possibility to visit the odd Chrismtas market.
