Dresden Day Trip By Rail - Cheapest Ticket Option

Hi, we'll be taking a day trip to Dresden next time we're in Berlin. What is the best/cheapest way of buying a day return ticket? Is it cheaper on-line in advance than just buying tickets at the station on the day?

Cheaper to buy in advance. Advance tickets are as low as €19.90 each way, buying full price at the station is €43 each way. Just be aware that the advance savings fares are only valid on a specific train. For English, buy tickets direct from DB on bahn.com.

There are no day-return tickets. There are day-tickets for regional trains (that would be Quer durchs Land for Berlin to Dresden) but it isn't a sensible option for this journey

Flixbus is cheaper than the train (can be as little as 9€ each way booked online well in advance) and has lots of departures from various points in Berlin

Thanks for this. I’ll take a look. Booking specific times isn’t a big problem.

I did a day trip to Dresden from Berlin last September. Two hours by express train, alas don't remember the price. Had a great time. It's a wonderful city with lots to see. If you enjoy art, the Old Masters museum is highly recommended.

Yes, thanks Charlie. The logistics seem straightforward enough, the only part I'm trying to work out is the cheapest way of buying the ticket. Given Brian's response Germany works like most other European countries in that the cheapest ticket can be less than half the price of the standard ticket. I got badly stung in Switzerland a few months ago by not getting myself organised for train tickets well in advance.
