Return to Nuremberg from Rothenburg odt

We will be going from Nuremberg to Rothenburg odt (on a Sunday) but haven't booked our return arrangements yet. Since these will all be on 'local' trains/bus ... should we book tickets ahead (lower cost?) or just get them that day? Also, anyone have any comments as to which is preferable - bus/train or train all the way. Both will have one transfer involved and are fairly close in overall travel time.

Nuremberg to Rothenburg is a trip inside the VGN local public transport association. There is nothing you can book. Just buy the ticket(s) on spot. Best deal is the VGN TagesTicket Plus which is EUR 16,80 for the whole VGN network. This mini group day ticket is good for 6 persons albeit only 2 of them must be 18 years or older. If bought on a Saturday this ticket is also good for Sunday.

.

Connections by train involve normally 2 changes. With the layout of the railways involved can't see how this should be possible with 1 change of trains. VGN tickets do cover all local public transport: regional trains, S-Bahn, U-Bahn (metro), trams and buses.

.

The DB timetable is easier to use than the VGN timetable.

Start: Nürnberg Hbf

Destination: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

and select as means of transport "only local transport" to be on the safe side when travelling on VGN tickets.

abalada - Thank you. It sounds like the VGN Tages Ticket plus might be perfect. We are planning on doing the Nuremberg > Bayreuth > Bamberg > Nuremberg triangle on a Saturday and then Rothenburg odt on Sunday. So, I gather from what you wrote, that single ticket might cover us for both days? Does that also cover the local around-town buses, trams, etc.?

Yes. With this itinerary you really take the maximum advantage out of this ticket.

> Does that also cover the local around-town buses, trams, etc.?

Yes. As said it covers all local public transport inside the VGN area.
