can one drive from Innsbruck to Fussen?

We are trying to make time to visit Fussen (visit castles and Ludwig musical) while we are Innsbruck. It looks like the train takes 4 hours each way. Is there a faster way (bus or car) to get to Fussen from Innsbruck during the end of December. Thanks for the info.

You can drive it, although I would make it a last minute decision in case the weather goes bad on you.

The road:Innsbruck Autobahn west to Zirl exit #87, 10km. (see note below).

Zirl on Austrian B-177/German B-2 (B=Bundestrasse, national highway) to Garmisch Partenkirchen (59km).

Garmisch on German B-23/Austrian B-177 to Leermoos (34km)

Leermoos to Fuessen Austrian 314/German ( I believe) B-17 (33km)

The whole trip is very scenic, but from Zirl to about Seefeld is a steep, although good road which could be a problem if it snows.

I agree going by train is cumbersome and time-consuming. There might be private bus tours from Innsbruck. Check the local tourist office when you get there.

Now about the autobahn: If this is the only time you will be driving the autobahn, take the local road to Zirl and save yourself the costs of an autobahn user decal. It's about $US8 for 10 days, I believe and not really worth for the 20km r/t you will be using the autobahn. But DON'T get on the autobahn without it. If they catch you, it will cost you close to $US 200.

Also, remember, in Austria they require an International Driver Permit (available at your local AAA office) for rental cars.

Check out at the tourist office of Innsbruck if there are bus tours.

Alternatives:

Train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

From Garmisch-Partenkirchen there a bus trips.

See under "Sightseeing Tours" at the bottom of the page.

Travel to Vils (via Garmisch-Partenkirchen).

Basically on the "back side" of Füssen.

From there by bus (not frequent). Or even by taxi - it's a less than 10 minutes ride.

Musical Ludwig²

Only on Sa and Su there is a 14:30 performance. All other are at 19:30 - which means you have to stay in Füssen or nearby.

No need to go up to Garmisch and then down again to Lermoos. You can drive west from Innsbruck past Zirl to Telfs and Nassereith and then take the Reutte route (via Lermoos). My road atlas makes that about 100km so wd tie in with michelin. Not sure of winter driving conditions though.

Lynda's route is very scenic, and a few km less than going by way of Zirl - Garmisch, but you have to cross the Fernpass, which can be tricky in the winter.
