First of all, you can drive from Fuessen to Salzburg in one day, easily.

However, if you want to do a bit sightseeing, stay overnight in Reit im Winkel, a perect Bavarian village. Then drive on the B-305 to Unterwoessen, Grassau, Prien. Vist the Chiemsee palace, and return to the Autobahn A-7 (12km) and head for Salzburg. Routing: Fuessen,m Garmisch, Mittenwald - Zirl - Autobahn A-1 to Oberaudorf exit. Frim there east to Walchsee, Koessen, Reit im Winkel. All lon good and scenic roads.

Or, just drive from Fuessen to Prien and spend the night and half dayt there, then take the B-305 to Reit im Winkel, and fom there on the Deutsche Alpenstrasse (Alpine highway, but still the B-305 ) to Berchtesgaden and enter Salzburg the back way, from Hallein.

Two of Ludwig II's palaces on on the way and would make for a nice excellent place to visit:

Linderhof with its famous Swan grotto

Herrenchiemsee on an island of that name in the Chiemsee by Prien. This is his version of Versailles, and its Hall of Mirrors is larger than Versailles. There is also an old convent on the adjacent island, Frauenchiemsee.

Either of these stops could be made on the same day traveling between Fuessen and Salzburg.

The suggestions about visiting Schloss Herrenchiemse are very good. Very enjoyable as is the Ludwig Museum on the premises. Another way to get a few more Euros from the tourists, but nevertheless interesting. A nice place to stay is in Prien at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof owned by the Family Estermann for about 102 years! I highly recommend their Wiener Schnitzel along with the Salzburg Hofbrauhaus beer. There also was another restaurant in town where you might listen to some local Bavarian music depending on the night of the week. People at the hotel could help you out. Also, about a 100 yard walk from the hotel to train station where one track has about a 100 year old steam train that will get you directly to the pier to catch one of the boats to Herrenchiemsee. Finally, there is a local Heimat Museum in Prien about 150-200 yards from the hotel that is well worth a visit. See how the church steeple you just passed getting there was moved! Fascinating! From Prien, about an hour or more to Salzburg.

We stopped in Mittenwald and stayed all night. It is worth stopping in, very pretty town. I loved it.

Also, you might want to stop at Konigsee. It is BEAUTIFUL! We were staying close by so we took a boat ride on the lake. Very relaxing. It doesn't take that long if you are in a hurry. But worthwhile.
