nuremberg as a base instead of munich

hi..will be flying into munich around the middle of oct...have 5 days free before i get a train from munich to bologna...was origianlly going to base myself in munich+do a day trip to nurenburg but how about i base myself in nurenburg+do day trips to minuich+salzburg from there...also i presume the hotel prices+food/drink prices are cheaper than munich or would the cost of getting the train to munich for the day trips cancel out the hotel-price savings...cheers..steve

N'berg is a fine base for seeing Munich but you'll have to travel there twice if you don't see all you want to see in just one day. And do you really want to do a daytrip to Salzburg if it means a 3-hour train trip each way? That cuts down on your time there too.

That said, Nuremberg is a fantastic base for seeing smaller places that are easier to see in a day - Bamberg, Würzburg, Rothenburg, and Regensburg, just for starters.

Other towns besides Nuremberg would work too. I'm staying in Neustadt an der aisch next month for 4 days and doing daytrips in the area. You can reach the above towns AND Nuremberg from there easily on daytrips - and prices in smaller towns are really reasonable. I located a mini-apartment that will cost me 19€/night in Neustadt. Train daypasses are also a bargain in this region.

For Munich and Salzburg, look into the Bayern ticket - 22€/day for one.
