Realistic ?

OK guys, I'm sure it's been done to death but I'm looking for info on this years Oktoberfest.

Firstly I wanted to know if it's realistic to fly from London to Salzburg (way cheaper at that time). Spend a day or two in Salzburg and then catch a train in to Munich (where we'll spend a night or two) to experience the beerfest and then train it back to Salzburg where we'll fly out again.

This way (I think ?) we'll be able to see two cities and save some cash as well. I don't think my liver could handle more than two nights at the festival anyways.

Anyone else got some similar itineraries ?

I'm keen to do a 4 or 5 day trip in total.

I'm also trynna decide on whether to do a quick in-out weekender just for the beerfest or spend a few more days as described above.

One last thing - Any suggestions on good value accommodation in Munich over that period ?

Thanks in advance.

That's a good idea.

If you stick to regional trains (RB, RE) from Salzburg to Munich you can use the Bavaria Ticket (EUR 27,00). A day ticket covering all regional trains in Bavaria (plus to/from Salzburg Hbf). In Munich it covers also all other local public transport (S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams, buses). The ticket is good for 2-5 persons travelling together. It is valid till 3am next day. On weekdays it is however only valid past 9am.

good value accomodation is hard to find then.

You almost certainly should book well in advance. I've tried Mariandl, Wallis and Apollo hotels in the past and if they still have availability they're often reasonable value.

All have websites.

to supplement what I just posted, Mariandl is 98 E normally, for a double room, 148 E for fairs and 220-odd in Oktoberfest

With the Bayernkarte, you can also stay overnight in Salzburg, take the train to Munich and return that night. There are trains running real late, and it takes ab out 2 to 21/2 hrs.

Check www.bahn.de for schedules. Remember, for the Bayernkarte you are limited to trains that start with R, leaving no earlier than 9AM, until 3AM the next morning for the return trip
