Day trips

We're a mid sixties couple, spending a week in Munich in mid may. Any insights on day trips in the area would be appreciated. Not so much into the hiking thing, more art and architecture. Thanks in advance. We've poured through the guidebooks, just interested in people's personal favourites.

My personal tip is Landshut - a gem of an old town and still pleasantly untouristy because most guidebooks seem to miss it, for whichever reason. You may want to have a look at my Landshut page over on Virtualtourist to get an idea: members.virtualtourist.com/m/f86bd/a997/

A lot go to Innsbruck or Salzburg for the day. Also depending on your interest you could spend an entire day at Dachau visiting the camp and palace.

Thanks. We had planned a day trip to Salzburg but, after reflection, decided to actually stay there so now were spending three nights there.

I've got two suggestions, both easily accessible by train. About 90 minutes north of Munich is Regensburg, with a medieval bridge across the river, an impressive Gothic cathedral and equally impressive rococo church, and what claims to be the oldest fast food place in Europe, a sausage stand by the medieval bridge. Then between Munich and Salzburg is Lake Chiemsee, a big lake at the base of the Alps. There are islands in the lake, accessible by ferry; nearest train station is Prien. On one of the islands is a palace modeled after Versailles, with an incredible Hall of Mirrors that seems to go on forever.
