Munich to Wagrain

We managed to get a good price on flights to Munich for the summer. However our teenage kids prefer the mountains to cities so we were thinking of going straight from Munich airport to Wagrain, since area seems well equipped with activities for families and teens.

I wish to be sure however regarding cost and dusration of trip from Munich airport to Wagrain. Apparently we can get a Bayern ticket for whole family to Salzburg for just €35 (hope this is true) and then I presume it's another train or two to Wagrain.

If someone can kindly confirm prices and duration of this trip, it would be greatly appreciated. Would we be able to buy train tickets there and then or it's better to buy them online?

ALso, is there an efficient public transport system in Wagrain if we wish to go a bit further to Salzburg salt mines or ice caves?

Thanks for any help

although abalada can almost certainly help you over the journey from Munich, Wagrain is in Austria- as you know!- so your questions would be better put to the Wagrain forum, I'd guess.

certainly the Bayern ticket will take you from Munich airport to Salzburg, and you will buy that on the day from a machine

If both of your kids are under 15 years a Bayern Ticket for 2 is even sufficient (€27). Otherwise Bayern Ticket for 4 persons is indeed €35.

From Salzburg to Wagrain the SVV tariff applies. Single ticket is EUR 11,90. Sadly the SVV has no mini group offers you can use.

Travel time to Wagrain is 1:20 from Salzburg. Last connection departs 17:08 or 15:08. Depending on the day of week. If you want to use public transport not an optimal base. Albeit inside the Alps you always have the problem that trips are time consuming and often only in a limited range of directions (as the valleys run).

Probably something bigger not that deep in the Alps. E.g. Berchtesgaden is could be an idea.

Local public transport in the Berchtesgadener Land is free if you stay there (using their guest card). A trip to Salzburg (49 min by direct buses) costs only a surcharge of €4 return.

Thanks for your replies. I liked Wagrain because there seems to be many attractions for whole family around. Probably we have to dare a bit more this time and rent a car. For us it will be first time so don t feel so confident about it but there's always the first time!
