City Night Line from Munich to Rome

My husband and I are planning to travel overnight from Munich to Rome on Saturday, December 21, 2013. Based on the information in this forum and elsewhere(http://www.citynightline.de/citynightline/view/en/index.shtml?ref=277984 and http://www.seat61.com/citynightline.htm), we plan to take the CityNightLine sleeper train. We would like to travel in a Comfortline 2-bed sleeper compartment.

I'd obviously prefer to get discounted tickets, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do so. Supposedly they are available 89-92 days in advance (the CityNightLine site says 91, but this forum has mentioned both 89 and 92). I realize that I can't book them this early, but I wanted to make sure I knew how to do it when the time came. So when I go to www.bahn.de and try for tickets for 29 Oct (89 days), 30 Oct (90 days), 31 Oct (91 days), and 1 Nov (92 days), all I get is "Fares not available."

The other thing I discovered was a message at the CNL info page (citynightline.de/citynightline/view/en/info_…):

-------------------------------------------

We regret to inform you that the City Night Line services

Munich – Milan – Munich (CNL 40485/40484)

Munich – Rome – Munich (CNL 485/484)

are currently operating with reduced wagon capacity in the couchette and sleeping car category. In addition, on services between Munich and Rome there will be no seated car until further notice. As a consequence, bicycle transport cannot be guaranteed.

-------------------------------------------

My questions for you guys:

1. How many days in advance do the discounted tickets actually become available? (89? 91? 92?) And at what time of day do they become available? I'd hate to try late in the day if they go on sale at midnight the night before.

2. Why can't I see ANY tickets for dates 89-92 days from now? (I can't even see non-discounted tickets. And this is the case for many dates earlier than 89 days from now too.)

3. Am I using the right website to book tickets (www.bahn.de)?

4. Can someone explain the info message from the CNL website to me? Does that explain why I'm not seeing tickets now?

This will be my first train ride - ever! - so I apologize for my ignorance. I really have spent a lot of time researching this! Thanks in advance for your help.

1. 91 days. Thus you can buy now tickets for the 31. Oct. 2013.

The tickets go on sale midnight. Local time of course: CEST = GMT + 2h.

2. The CNL train run in Italy is not yet confirmed. Thus DB does not let anyone book these. At the moment the CNL train runs on this route are only confirmed till the 30. Aug. 2013.

Italian railway politics. Won't change soon.

3. Yes. CNL is owned by DB (Deutsche Bahn).

4. This is of course bad luck. Such a chaos like with the night trains into Italy currently is not normal.

The CNL trains to Rome have currently only 2 couchette and 2 sleeper cars. Normal are 2 seated cars, 2-4 couchette cars and 2 sleeper cars.

Since this year only cars with "side selective door control" are allowed in Italy. Now the cars support this technology - but the loco provided by Trenitalia cannot control the cars on this. Thus the doors have to be staffed at the stops. And staff is expensive. Thus fewer cars.

Thank you abalada! This is great information.

1. Does this mean midnight at the beginning of the 91st day? So in my case, since I'm 7 hours behind Munich time, 17:00 on 20 Sept to get tickets for 21 Dec (since they actually go on sale at midnight on 21 Sept)?

2. Does that mean that even if I check back on 21 Sept they may not be available for 21 Dec? How will I know when these are confirmed?

1. Nope. You're a specialist finding exactly all existing exceptions.

From 15. December 2013 on the new timetable for 2014 applies. Which will go online only early or mid October. And of course you can only book when the new timetable is online. The date/time when the new timetable will be online is however normally posted here as soon it is known.

2. You mean esp. this night train to Italy? Difficult to predict. There could be any change coming with the new timetable. From no more offered to a different loco. Currently the train runs for the next month or so are just confirmed days or hours before the recent already confirmed period ends.
