Schwabing - Maxvorstadt Questions

Had a great first visit to Munich last year, and am going back in September this year (before Oktoberfest). We stayed by Sendlinger Tor last year, thanks to those on this forum, but want to try a different area this year. We have a reservation at Pension am Siegestor, 5 Akademiestrasse (which I have spelled wrong, but I don't know how to properly make the letter/symbol in place of the double s.....). The questions are:

1. Is this Pension located in Schawbing proper? I know there has been some "Schwabing sprawl" in recent years and the definition of the neighbhorhood has expanded somewhat. I ma pretty sure that this is Schwabing proper, but just wanted to make sure.

2. Is the distinction between Schwabing and Maxvorstadt as follows: if one is standing at Odeonsplatz looking towards the Siegestor (which I guess is North?), Schwabing is on the right and Maxvorstadt is on the left? In other words, Leopoldstrasse is the dividing road, albeit the two neighborhoods may begin a little further down that Odeonsplatz.

3. Know any good hotels in Maxvorstadt? I thought the area in and around St. Ursula's church was so nice, I may move there!!

4. I think I have seen mention on the forum (by the missing in action KIR, no less) of a beergarden called Max E that he liked -- any clues to where it might be, or any other beergardens in those two neighborhoods that you like (not including ones in the Englischer Garden).

Thanks for the help!

Writing two ss instead of ß is entirely correct.

Well, it is on the border of Maxvorstadt and Schwabing, but it is still Maxvorstadt.

One street further north would be Schwabing.

No. The area north of the Siegestor is Schwabing, south of it is Maxvorstadt.

The Siegestor (= arch of triumph) is located exactly on the spot, where Ludwigstr. (which starts at Odeonsplatz and runs south-north) changes its name to Leopoldstr.: http://goo.gl/maps/mybMM

3. Know any good hotels in Maxvorstadt? I thought the area in and around St. Ursula's church was so nice, I may move there!!

For Maxvorstadt, have a look at:

Das Hotel

Türkenstr. 35

.

St. Ursula is in Schwabing, at Kaiserplatz, not in Maxvorstadt.

There's a Pension at Kaiserplatz:

Kaiserplatz 12

4. I think I have seen mention on the forum (by the missing in action KIR, no less) of a beergarden called Max E that he liked -- any clues to where it might be, or any other beergardens in those two neighborhoods that you like (not including ones in the Englischer Garden).

It's near the Pension:

Max Emanuel Brauerei

Adalbertstraße 33

.

I also quite like the Kaisergarten beergarden in Schwabing (it is located right next to St. Ursula):

Kaisergarten

Kaiserstraße 34

Their Wiener Schnitzel at 19.50€ is in my opinion the best in Munich, veal like it is supposed to be and simply delicious.

Thank you, Panda, fantastic information as always. We will definitely visit the Kaisergarten and I will sample the wiener schnitzel. Last year, had wiener schnitzel at the Ayinger restaurant across from the Hofbrauhaus that I thought was outstanding (as was the veal goulash), so I am looking forward to trying Kaisergarten's.
