Train from Munich to Vienna

As I am a Flight Attendant and have to fly standby, I cannot book tickets prior to our arrival. Will that be a problem? Is it more expensive to book same or next day as opposed to 2 weeks out? Also what is the easiest way to get get to Vienna from Munich other than expensive Eurorail? Do we have to transfer in Salzburg to the Austrian train system? My husband is recovering from a stroke and cannot walk long distances. Does anybody know if there are senior discounts or handicap discounts on the trains in Germany and/or Austria? Thanks.

There is a Railjet branded service between Munich and Budapest with calls in Salzburg and Vienna.

Note Munich Hbf is a huge station and there might be a fair bit of walking required to get to the train after arrival, depending on how you arrive there.

Do not use resellers such as Eurail/Rail Europe/Eurorail, etc! Eurorail as an entity does not exist. Instead each country has its own rail administration and there are some private services as well.

There are direct trains from Munich to Vienna but these are a lot cheaper if you book well in advance. Even two weeks beforehand the cheapest seats (€29) will have probably gone. On the day you can buy a standard-priced ticket, however it will cost you about €90 if bought on the day.

However there is away around this so it is considerably cheaper - you can get a Bayern Ticket www.toytowngermany.com/wiki/Bayern_ticket which costs €26 for two and you can use this on regional and local trains as far as Salzburg - from the airport get the S-Bahn to Muenchen-Ost and change to a regional train to Salzburg. Then from Salzburg use the Westbahn service to Vienna. This costs €25 and you pay on the train.
