Train from Nancy France to Munich

Hi All,

We are coming to Munich again for 6 days this October and looking forward to it! We want to catch the train from Nancy (south/east France - where we will drop off our hire car) to Munich and need some advice. It appears from the DB Bahn site this is possible via Strasbourg and Stuttgart with RE/TGV/ICE trains (border crossing at Kehl) and we would like to know the best and most economical way to purchase the ticket please. Also, the connection times of 8 minutes seem to be very short; is this a problem?

You can buy tickets for the regional trains in France (Nancy to Strasbourg) locally; no need to buy ahead. In fact you can buy the ticket for the whole trip right there but it can be significantly cheaper to buy the ticket from Strasbourg to Munich from DB online ASAP (from 92 days in advance)

You can also drive to Strasbourg, and drop it off there. Strasbourg is a very nice city.

Thank you for your reply. Is there a German Rail Pass for the trip from Strasbourg to Munich that that is best for this trip or should we just buy the advance purchase fare for this route?

There is a German Rail Pass period (not sure what you mean with a "rail pass from sowmehere to somewhere) , but it makes no finacial sense at all to buy a whole rail pass just for one trip. You can eitehr buy the advance purchase fare or wait and buy a full price fare when tehre if you value flexibility more than savings.

No. A German Rail Pass would only cover Kehl to Munich. While Strasbourg to Kehl is just a few kilometers this still won't pay for.

You can check with www.sncf-voyages.com for the complete trip.

Another option is to buy a standard fare ticket on spot from Nancy to Kehl (EUR 28,70) and buy through the DB timetable a discounted special from Kehl to Munich. These start from EUR 29,00. You can buy at earliest 92 days before departure.

For the connecting time of 8 minutes in Stuttgart, extend it by several hours and see the more than excellent Mercedes Benz Museum, Stuttgart is after all where the automobile was invented and is still commercialized. Also a couple of special events in October, the world's second largest beer festival which is at the same time the world's largest fun festival, the Cannstatter Volksfest ( www.cannstatter-volksfest.de ); and the world's largest pumpkin exhibition at the excellent palace in nearby Ludwigsburg with almost a half million of them on display of over 450 types and Europe's largest pumpkins and squash, large themed sculptures made from them, and food and drink made from them, just an excellent day when coupled with the longest and best palace tours that I've been on in Europe.
