munich airport to innsbruck

Hi

We have booked to fly to Munich airport on 6th July 2013 arriving at 10am , we need to get to Innsbruck initially then on to Kitzbuhel then Salzburg before returning to munich. We originally planned to travel by train but are wondering if it may be cheaper to hire a car. Any advice would be appreciated Can anybody suggest the easiest and cheapest way to travel there are 3 people in our party.

many thanks

Anita

Hi WidnesBubbles,

It's quite easy to do this by train -- no hassles about traffic on the autobahns or congestion or construction; no worries about dodging traffic and trams and pedestrians while following one-way streets in old city centers; no extra fees for parking or high gas prices.

Much easier to do by train.

Check the train schedules at the German rail site

www.bahn.com

Also take into consideration that you'll be limiting your carbon footprint if you take the train -- you'll be helping to conserve the beauty that you came over to see -- yaaaay!!

Cheapest: Munich Airport to Mittenwald on a Bayern Ticket. EUR 30 for 3 persons.

www.toytowngermany.com/wiki/Bayern_ticket

Mittenwald is a really beautiful Alpine town

www.alpenwelt-karwendel.de/en/mittenwald

And the railway route via Mittenwald is much more scenic than the main railway via Kufstein.

eisenbahnen.at/bilderalben/karwendelbahn.sht…

From Mittenwald to Innsbruck on VVT tickets. Mittenwald to Innsbruck Hbf is EUR 8,00 per person. Mittenwald to any tram or bus stop in Innsbruck is EUR 9,00 (same ticket plus core zone surcharge Innsbruck).

www.vvt.at/page.cfm…

.

Innsbruck Hbf to Kitzbühel and Kitzbühel to Salzburg Hbf can be done on a Einfach-Raus-Ticket each. EUR 32,00 of all 3 of you together.

oebb.at/en/…index.jsp

ÖBB timetable

http://fahrplan.oebb.at/bin/query.exe/en

From: Innsbruck Hbf

To: Kitzbühel

and select as products the "Einfach-Raus-Ticket".

.

Salzburg Hbf to Munich can be done on another Bayern Ticket. This ticket covers not only the regional trains to Munich but also the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses in Munich.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Start: Salzburg Hbf

Destiinatation: München Hbf

and select as means of transport "only local transport" if you want to use a Bayern Ticket for this trip.

.

All these tickets can be bought on spot from ticket machines.

Hi

We have found your reply most helpful and we are keen to take your advice and take the scenic route however we have tried today to plan out our journey, there seems to be a couple of problems. Firstly there appears to be a 10 to 15 minute walk once we arrive at the main munich station, we are wondering how difficult this will be with suitcases and bags. Secondly we will not be planning on stopping at Mittenwald ( due to lack of time and luggage storage) the train timetables give only 1 minute between trains or a 2 hour delay??

Do you have any further thoughts that may sway our decisions

Many thanks

The timetable gives by default the tightest possible train connection. After arriving at Munich Airport take the next departing S-Bahn (S1 or S8) to München Hbf (main train station). These trains arrive at the underground S-Bahn platform. The trains to Mittenwald depart from the northern wing station (tracks 27-36). The are escalators and lifts to get you to the surface level.

when arriving by S8: go to the platform end in driving direction to go up directly to the north wing station

when arriving by S1: go to the platform end opposite of the driving direction ...

> give only 1 minute between trains or a 2 hour delay??

Small accident with the delayed delivery of new train sets. Thus there is now (from tomorrow on) a change of trains where in the timetable a 1 minute stopover was planned. Same platform. They won't let you strand on the platform. Even if it takes 2 minutes.

You can but the VVT tickets from the Austrian conductor.

sorry, do you mean the 2 trains are on the same platform and we shouldn't miss the connection?

Yes. Tracks 2 and 3 share the same platform. You'll be kicked out of the first train as it ends there. And the second train won't depart as long as it looks that anyone on the platform may still want to board it.
