Munich - Augsburg trains

I've noticed some trains like the 09:36 Munich Hbf to Augsburg Hbf show two codes like RE57106 and RE57306. Does this mean they are portion workings i.e. two trains joined up that split further up and go on to different end destinations?

You can click on either train number and will get the whole run of the train - the train splits in Augsburg and goes to Ulm respective to Treuchtlingen.

OK so how does it actually work if you're boarding/alighting at Augsburg?

If one portion arrives on a Munich bound service can you board that or do you have to wait for the other portion to arrive and for the trains to be joined up before you can board?

Of course you can enter when the train is at the platform - occasionally they close the door for half a minute during the "docking" procedure. No sense to have people wait without good reason.
