Hotel close to Olympiastadia

Hello, hoping to get tickets to see Bruce Springsteen at the Olympiastadia on Sunday the 26th of May 2012. Not sure whether to go for two or three nights depending on cost and will be flying probably from Manchester on the Friday or Saturday. Can anyone recommend a good hotel ideally in or close to the city centre as we will be doing the 'touristy bit'[ but with good links to the Olympiastadia (where ever it may be!) Also any 'must see places' and whether we could do it in two rather than three nights.

Thank you all in anticipation

Debz xx

1. Re: Hotel close to Olympiastadia

Finally saw a "we" in your post so how many are "we"

Assume you are flying Lufthansa or Easyjet MAN-MUC and not Mr O'leary into Memmingen

My kids use the Lufthansa flight all the time (to/from UK/Uni) except when my son did a cheap weekend trip for the Oktoberfest.

Munich has a very good public transport network and there is a U-Bahn line U3 that runs from the city centre to the Olympic stadium (Olympia Zentrum).

NOT Olympia Einkaufs Zentrum - that is a shopping centre.

The U-Bahn U3 only takes 12mins from Marienplatz (city centre) to Olympia Zentrum

and click on the Urban Rail Network map

So you can pretty much stay anywhere in Munich. You will notice from above rail map that the S8 and S1 run from the Airport into the city entering from different directions.

Both run every 20mins. As an example it takes the S8 ~ 40mins from the Airport to Marienplatz.

Some people like to stay as close to the centre as possible. SOme people stay around the Hauptbahnhof - not the most salubrious of places but handy.

Another popular area is around Rosenheimerplatz. Rosenheimerplatz is on all the S-Bahns including the S8 to the Airport. As all the S-Bahns run through this station there is one every 2mins or so to Marienplatz. Rosenheimerplatz is in Haidhausen district which is a popular "trendy" place to live. numerous bars & restaurants.

Plenty of accommodation in the area including Hilton, Holiday Inn, Novotel and a Motel One "Deutsches Museum"

Motel One also have a place at Sendlinger Tor which is at the end of a partially pedestrianised shopping street leading to Marienplatz

There is also a Motel One on Orleans strasse not far from the Ostbahnhof. Here you will also find a Residence Inn (by Marriot) which appears recently to be a popular choice.

The 19 Tram runs down Orleansstrasse to Ostbahnhof and all the way into the city. An alternative to going on the underground.

From the Ostbahnhof you have all the S-Bahns running through the city centre or the U5 to Odeonsplatz where you can change for the U3

The new

You can get various day tickets that give you unlimited use of Munichs public transport network based on the zones (see the Urban rail network map)

Partner cards offer the best option for frequent travellers. "Partner" cards are for groups of 2-5people.

When arriving at the network you can purchase the "Airport City Day Ticket - Partner" - this is EXACTLY the same as a "Partner Tageskarte Gesamtnetz" - Partner Day Ticket - Entire Network - except that it is prevalidated to help tourists - Costs €20

Gives you UNLIMITED use of the entire Munich public transport network (ALL S-Bahn, U-Bahn, Trams & Buses) from time of purchase until 6am the following morning.

There are other day tickets available. e.g. whilst in Munich if interested in visiting sites in the White zone - "Innenraum" - Inner district a partner ticket for the day costs €10.20

e.g. you could buy this on the day of the concert and just travel around Munichs "White" zone all day then to the stadium in the evening and return at night - all for €10.20 for "both" of you

As far as "must sees" are concerned there is no such thing as a "must see". One persons "must see" is anothers "why bother"

You might be interested in the Nymphenburg Palace

or the Deutsches Museum Science Museum

Or BMW Welt & Museum

the Alte/Neue Pinatothek

OR any number of other Museums/Galleries or buildings

If you wanted a day out you could visit Salzburg (2hrs) or Herrenchiemsee on Lake Chiemsee (1hr from Munich on the Munich-Salzburg train) using the Bayern Ticket

the Bayern Ticket. Costs €22 for 1 person then €4 for each additional person up to a total of 5 people. Gives you UNLIMITED use of ALL Regional public transport in Bavaria. Includes ALL Regional trains (includes all Regional trains from Munich to Salzburg - there is a train every hour and the journey takes 2hrs), ALL Regional buses and ALL city transport in Munich, Augsburg and Nürnberg.

Only the fast ICE, IC, EC and RJ Railjet trains are excluded

Valid from 9am weekdays (midnight weekends) until 3am the following morning

Full T&Cs and click on Bayern

It is another on of König Ludwigs follies (he of Neuschwanstein "Disney castle" fame). Located at Prien am Chiemsee (only 1hr from Salzburg or Munich on the Munich - Salzburg train - again Bayern ticket)

There are various ferry services to the islands. Take the local steam train to the harbour
