Ostbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof questions...

We will be staying at the Courtyard Munich City East (Orleansstrasse 81-83). The closest train station stop is the Ostbahnhof.

So, when we take the train from the airport to the hotel, will we need to transfer at the Hauptbahnhof? And, we also plan on taking a couple day trips via train - does that mean we wil also need to transfer there as well?

How long of a walk is it between the Ostbahnhof and the Hauptbahnhof -- would it be doable without luggage?

Thanks!

You simply get off the airport train line S8 at Ostbahnhof, after a trip of 35 minutes.

The line S1 would take around 50 minutes to Ostbahnhof.

You then either walk 500m north-east to your hotel, or you take the tram and get off at the first stop right in front of the hotel.

.

About day trips, some trains to Salzburg stop at Ostbahnhof, for the rest you would have to first take the S-Bahn to Hauptbahnhof (8 minutes).

Please see answer 2 in here for details about your hotel: tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g187309-i118-k53…

Thank you Panda74! Looks easy enough and a straight shot down to the hotel from the train station.

If by chance the weather is bad and we take the tram from the station - what number is it?

It's tram 19 - you'll see it as soon as you leave the Ostbahnhof train station building: direction St.-Veit-Straße.

But you just need to stay on one stop and hop off at Haidenauplatz. Does this PDF work? efa.mvv-muenchen.de/mvv/FILELOAD…

If not, you can use Munich's transport site to check out the route yourself - mvv-muenchen.de/static_languages/…index.html

UncleOswald - thanks for that information. Unfortunately the first PDF file did not work. The second did though.

Question -the train fare from airport to Ostbahnhof - does it include the tram ticket- or do we just buy that on the tram or in the station? There will be just two of us.

if you have bought a partner ticket for whole network, that works on tram, also buses, underground (U-bahn) for that whole day.

And also, depending on how long you're staying, you can buy a 3-day-partner ticket for Munich's central area. It's valid for up to 5 people (be sure to stamp it in the blue box before heading down to the platform so as to validate it - the same with your airport ticket) and costs 23,70 €.

You'll then have to buy train tickets if you want to travel to Salzburg / outside of Munich, but I think at 23,70 € for the bus, tram and underground, the 3 day ticket is pretty good.

Actually, to make things easier for tourists the Airport-City-Ticket already comes out of the ticket machine validated.

However, all other tickets you do have to stamp in one of the MVV stamping machines to validate them (just once, before you first use it!): oktoberfest.de/content/generatedimages/3901/…

Thank you all for the great guidance. The partner ticket will probably be our choice for at least the airport transfer. We are going to Nuremberg for a couple of days and then a day trip to Regensberg...so the remainder of our Munich days will be split.

We, too, will be planning to take the train to Ostbahnhof from the airport, and then the tram # 19 to my hotel in May, 2012. But would there be enough space for the 5 medium sized luggages (plus small hand luggages) that the 5 of us will be carrying when we board the tram? Is there storage space on the tram? Thanks.

Don't worry, there's plenty of space and public transport in Munich is not as full as you may have experienced in other cities.

Please see end of this Traveler Article for a photo of the inside of a Munich tram: tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187309-c151627/Munic…

Just keep your luggage next to the door, you will be getting off at the first stop, i.e. after 2 minutes anyway.
