Alps day trips via Munich

We've been wanting to see the Alps in the summer by car for two years but our plans always get too confusing. There is so much we want to see but we don't really enjoy the idea of hotel-hopping and the constant packing and moving. Here are our questions:

1) Is it possible to settle into one luxurious Munich hotel and do day trips to the various villages we wish to see in the alps. If so, what would be a good part of Munich to stay in and a good hotel reccomendation. How about the Arabella Sheraton? Is that too far North in the city? Is it not convenient for parking and returning each evening?

2) Could we get as far as the Swiss border and SudTirol (Bolzano) in these day trips?

3) If, during our day trips, we found a hotel in the Alps and fell in love with it, which month would increase our chances of there being last-minute availability to check in? June?, July?, September?

If you want to visit the Alps, why not stay in the Alps instead of Munich which is a distance away. All of western Austria, or Berchtesgaden, Mittenwald, or Garmisch-Parkenkirchen would be good places to base yourself in the actual Alps. All will have plenty to do around them that isn't very far away.
