Train Travel from Austria to Hohenschwangau & Neuschwanstein

We will be traveling for 2 weeks in Austria in June 2011 by OEBB train. Our base cities are Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck.

We plan to take day trips to Gemany and would like to visit Hohenschwangau and the Neuschwanstein Castle.

Can anyone advise on the most direct route from an Austrian city to Hohenschwangau by train? How many hours? Also, should tickets for the caste tour be purchased in advance and is their a recommended tour company?

thank you for your help, FloridaCathy

Let's start with a map showing public transport in the Werdenfels region.

bahn.de/regional/view/mdb/alle/dbregio/ausfl…

Füssen as town is not shown on the map, as it's not part of the Werdenfels region, but it is located at the shown lake Forggensee.

Coming from Füssen you use the railroad via Seefeld i. Tirol - Mittenwald - Garmisch-Partenkirchen. And just keep in mind that Mittenwald - Garmisch-Partenkirchen is already a 30 minutes train trip.

.

Now there are a number of options.

- direct bus from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Hohenschwangau

- ditto with changes en route (you have to change buses at the Echelsbacher Bridge which marks the border between the Upper Bavaria and Allgäu regions)

- train to Reutte, bus to Füssen, bus to Hohenschwangau

- train to Vils, taxi from there to Füssen of Hohenschwangau (but Vils is small, i.e. you have to call a taxi company that there is a taxi when you arrive)

- train to Ulrichsbrücke-Füssen (a train stop not shown on the map between Reutte and Vils) and walk from there the to Hohenschwangau on the Fürstenstrasse (Dukes' Road - however only pedestrians and cyclists allowed nowadays). 2 hours. Scenic walk along lake Alpsee. Easy walk - at least as far as Hohenschwangau village. Only to the 2 castles itself it goes uphill.

From: Innsbruck

To: Hohenschwangau

To: Fuessen

To: Ulrichsbruecke-Fuessen

.

But with plans to visit Mittenwald, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Neuschwanstein I would consider rather an additional base in this area. This will save you travel time, travel costs, accommodation costs (Bavaria is normally a bit cheaper than Austria) and e.g. staying in an Alpine resort like Mittenwald is a much different experience than in the city of Innsbruck which is in the rather wide Inn valley. Of course you can stay there at outer suburbs of Innsbruck which are at the valley borders, but this conflicts with the function as base city. My tendency on this is rather: Innsbruck as day trip from Mittenwald than the opposite way.

Does not harm if you don't arrive there at morning. Because if you arrive later the next tours of the castles can be all sold out and you may have to wait longer than planned. Keep in mind that you have to collect the reserved tickets latest 1 hours before your tour starts.

The tours through the castles itself are exclusively by the castle administrations. But there may be bus tours offered from Innsbruck. Easiest is just to visit the tourist offices on such offers, as not all of them can be found easily or at all on the internet.

Abalada:

Excellent information/advice particularly on travel options. I will check into Germany as an alternate base city. I could not have planned this trip w/out the expertise and generosity of TA travelers!
