Getting to and from Fussen/Hohenschwangau

I am going to be hiring a car from either Innsbruck or Zurich to go to Neuschwanstein Castle, then on to Munich in December. I was wondering what the road conditions are like in either direction, and if one is safer or nicer to do than the other.

Road conditions will depend on the route you choose. From both start points you can also drive "flat" to Neuschwanstein. Than the road conditions will be OK.

If you rent a car in one country and return in another you'll have to pay a pretty high international drop off fee. As the car has to be driven back to its original country.

Train from Zürich to Lindau and rent there.

Train from Innsbruck to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (a really scenic railroad) and rent there.

Or stick to the trains the whole route till Füssen. There is however no really direct train route.

DB timetable

From: Zuerich

From: Innsbruck

To: Fuessen

To: Hohenschwangau

also an option: Innsbruck to Reutte be train. From Reutte to Füssen (~ 10 km) by taxi. Only a few buses per day on this route.

VVT timetable

From: Innsbruck Hbf

To: Reutte

Thanks for your information, you are a big help. We will actually be hiring a car in Lucerne & driving through to Paris, so we will have a car to do the trip, either way. I think we will be going to Neuschwanstein from Innsbruck, I saw there is a way to go back along the main highway towards Lucerne for a bit then up through Ruette.

Is this way generally clear of snow? Would you recommend getting a 4WD or AWD vehicle to drive the icy roads, or will a standard vehicle with chains be ok?

for the rest of our trip by the way, we are heading up to Munich, then Nuremberg, across to Amsterdam then down to Paris if that would give you a better idea for car recommendation?

Thank you again!

Standard vehicle with chains? It´s still central Europe, not northern Sweden we are speaking about. It is good to have some chains in the trunk for the case of a (admittedly rare) snowstorm, but usually all you need are winter tyres.

Btw. if you have an accident in winter without winter tyres you are automatically liable for a part of the damage - so make sure your rental car is equipped with winter, not summer or year-round tyres.
