Hi Kiaola,

Yes, Garmisch is a smaller town, and it has a few quaint and sweet areas -- mainly the two pedestrian zones. It's also a nice base for walks or hikes in the valleys or on the mountains. And of course, you can ascend the Zugspitze from Garmisch.

Another good choice is Mittenwald, which is smaller and prettier, I think. It's also easier to get going for a walk since you don't have much town to walk through to get into the countryside.

Have fun as you plan!

Do you recognise the Bavarian town where the opening scene of The Great Escape was filmed?

We visited Munich the first week of November. We rented a car and went to Oberammergau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the same day. Easy, pretty drive. Oberammergau is perfectly quaint and smaller than Garmish-Partenkirchen. You could even take a side trip to Linderhoff Castle. In Garmisch, we walked the gorge. It was a beautiful day, so all of it was that much nicer. Even in rain, I think I could have enjoyed this.
