Best driving route from Neuschwanstein to Garmisch

We are a family of 4 who will be traveling in a VW van from visiting Neuschwanstein on a Friday afternoon to Garmisch. Google maps shows two possible routes: B17& B23 through Oberammergau or Fenpassstrasse/ B179 through Reutte/ Lermoos. Which route would be more scenic/better on May 24? My husband does have the international driving permit for driving in Austria and we know about the stickers. Your help is really appreciated.

Hi,

when you have the time, I would suggest to drive the Fernpass-Strasse. It is a very narrow road with a lot of bends, but it is very scenic.

You really cannot go wrong with either. I would go with the northern route and stop for a few minutes at Wieskirche and/or Ettal Abbey. There is also good scenery along much of that route. If you prefer nature or are tired of Baroque churches by that time, take the southern route. A lot depends on what else you plan to do on this trip. It is easy to overdose on Baroque architecture and on mountain scenery in Bavaria and Austria.

How about the route past Linderhof and Plansee (2-23-L255-179-L396)? This is longer and slower but looks very scenic.
