Does anyone have a recommendation for a family of 6 in Garmisch for 2-3 nights this summer? Thanks

even if you do not ski, take the train and/or cable car to the zugspitze, it is the highest point in Germany and is quite a site to see.

If you are staying longer than 2-3 days, for a family of six, try to find a Ferienwohnungen, aka Vacation Home, as they are fully furnished apartments, some with 2 bedrooms. However, normal German hotels are nice since all of them are "Bed and Breakfasts" (note that the breakfast is continental (german) style, but still filling. BTW, try to find a local restaurant or butcher (metzgerei) that has a weisswurst breakfast, which has white veal sausages, pretzels, mustard, and weissbeer.

There is a small US military base nearby, so if you are military or have a ID card, you can stay there, Edelweiss hotel, which is new and nice.

Another good place to stay and visit is Hotel Reisersee, which is a lake on top of a hill with a hotel and restaurant on site. good for a summer beer or Radler.

You can also go to Partnach Gorge which is a leisurely nature hike with waterfall

strolling through the Garmisch side of the town center is nice, they have a few nice shops there. Chocolates are especially good.

You can drive about 20 mins out of town to Ettal Kloster and see the church there, it is pretty nice, and can also go to one of King Ludwig's castles, Schloss Linderhof, further out of town, maybe an hour away is Neuschwanstein castle which is the famous looking castle that inspired Disney

Another good "church/restaurant with beer" is Kloster Andechs which is in betwwen Munich and Garmisch and is at the top of a hill with lake Ammersee below, nice view. Try the pork knuckle or gegrillte haxen, which is really good there.

Look for a local fest, they are going on all summer. I went to one in Ettal Kloster and it was great.

Finally, taking the train to Munich from Garmisch is not too bad for a day trip, but I assume you would be going there anyway, BTW, if you are driving from Munich Airport to Garmisch, take A99 and A95 autobahn rather than the Mittlererring, which is an "interior" city beltway, but has a lot of construction now. The link between 99 and 95 only has a few miles of local roads which aren't that bad

Hi Oersted H,

It may be very difficult to find one room that fits all six in your party; you may have to be prepared to get two rooms.

You can look at one site at all the hotels or pensions that are available, and you can search by date and by number of persons. The site is at

www.gapa.de

I would look for a hotel that is central to town or that is nearby the train station.

Once you have a short list of hotels or pensions, come back and let us know, and we'll give you our opinions on them.

Have fun!
