Innsbruck is a town to me, just like many other towns. I've never been excited by it.

Mittenwald is a village, little more, high in the mountains, with a pedestrianised main street, a cable car and a chair lift.

Mittenwald would be my choice out of the two.

it really depends what you are looking for in the evening.

I stayed in both places and was bored to death in Mittenwald in evening as nothing but quick dinner to do but if it is that peace you want - perfect. After all you are pretty much in middle of nowhere. Innsbruck, a beautiful city imo, on the other hand has some nightlife, a fantastic theatre, which am into, great reastaurants, cafes etc.

Mittenwald is a Alpine resort high in the mountains. One of the nicest towns in the Alps.

Innsbruck is a city - the biggest which really is in the Alps - down in a wide valley.. And an administrative (state capital city of the Austrian state Tyrol) and industrial center with an intact old city center.

Mittenwald is best known for its painted buildings and its violin making tradition. Thus some culture and history there as well. While the best known landmark of Innsbruck, the Golden Roof, ranks high on my personal list of the most disappointing sights.

I'd vote for Mittenwald, and I totally agree with Abalada's comments about the Golden Roof.

We LOVE MIttenwald. I'd skip Innsbruck for Mittenwald every time.

The view on the train ride into and out of Innsbruck was awesome. The hotel we stayed at (Weisses Kreuz) was right in the Altstadt and very good. But 2 days there was about 1 too many for me. And I totally agree with abalada on the Golden Roof too.

We are going to Mittenwald in a few weeks for 2 days!!!

My wife and I did a day trip to Mittenwald from Innsbruck last Sept.

Mittenwald is a beautiful village, but lacks night time activities. As mentioned the train ride from/to Innsbruck should not be missed.

I would go with Innsbruck and also do a day trip to Reutte.

Also, Innsbruck may be easier to continue on in your journey.

thanks for all the advice! Im still abit torn, I would really love to get a tast of bavaria and I dont need a ton of nightlife, just some place authenic to eat. If I stay in Mittenwald does anyone have any advice on a hotel thats near the train station?
