Rail fares to various cities

We were thinking about taking day trips from Heidelberg to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and Strasbourg. Would anyone be willing to tell us what the cost would be? 1st class, 2nd class--it doesn't matter. I know sometimes rail fares are less if you depart after 9am and return by midnight (?) the same day. Thanks!

All not exactly close for a day trip. Nuremberg especially. Heidelberg forum is full of suggestions for closer day trips (Speyer, Schwetzingen, Weinheim, Neckar Valley up to Würzburg). To reach these places you can use VRN day tickets. Day ticket for 2 persons is between EUR 8,70 (e.g. Schwetzingen) to EUR 20,00 (Speyer, Würzburg). These prices are for 2 persons together. Covered are all means of local public transport: regional trains, S-Bahn, trams and buses. No past 9am restriction on weekdays.

To Stuttgart you can use a Baden-Württemberg Ticket. Again a local public transport ticket (regional trains, S-Bahn, trams and buses). However on weekdays only valid past 9am. EUR 27 for 2 persons.

You can also use a Baden-Württemberg Ticket to travel to Kehl which is just across the Rhine from Strasbourg. You can either just buy already in Heidelberg tickets for the remaining trip from Kehl to Strasbourg (EUR 4,10 pp) and stay seated in Kehl. Or you change in Kehl to the Strasbourg (CTS) city bus #21. A 24 hours ticket for 2-3 persons (ticket 24h Trio) is EUR 6,00. This ticket covers the bus #21 and all other city buses and trams in Strasbourg.

For planning trips with any of the above mentioned tickets you can use the DB timetable and select there as means of transport "only local transport".

Baden-Württemberg Ticket will show up in the "Savings fares" column. VRN fares are however unknown to the DB timetable ("Fares not available").

Stuttgart is 1:29 away by a direct regional train.
