Xmas market day trip from Heidelberg

Hi

Currently in Heidelberg and having a great time. Does anyone have any suggestions for a day trip tomorrow. Ideally just for a few hours, perhaps to see Christmas markets tomorrow afternoon. We are not driving so needs to be accessible by train. Thought of Mainz or Speyer?

Somewhere picturesque or with a great market.

Thanks

Both these cities have fantastic markets - Mainz is larger and right beside the Dom. webcamgalore.com/EN/…5147.html Plenty else to see in Mainz too if you get there before the makets get into full swing.

Ladenburg is a well-preserved old walled town, a precious little place with Roman and medieval roots, and it hosts a Christmas market on the Market Square on weekends ( I've never been there at Christmas, but it's a fantastic town anytime.) Ladenburg is only 12 minutes from Heidelberg's main station by direct train and should be on every Heidelberg visitor's list, IMO, if only for a couple of hours.

I love Mainz's Christmas market as well.

FYI, Ladenburg's Christmas market opens at 14:00 and runs until 10 pm on Sat, 8 pm on Sun.

Bad Wimpfen ( www.badwimpfen.de ) is nearby, and has an excellent weekend only Christmas Market in the oldtown. Perhaps the local transpoetation system serves it, if not, a Baden-Wuerttemberg day train ticket is another inexpensive option.

I also recommend Ladenburg, so close to Heidelberg. I'd prefer Speyer, too but Ladenburg is just so charming. I used to ride by bike between HD and L, and it was about 1/2 hour by bike, a nice ride (in summer).

Wienheim is also convenient. #5 tram from Bismarkplatz, about 35 min. ride. It has a lovely old medieval area with small canals where tanners used to work.

Mosbach is another lovely small medieval town, about an hour from HD, on S-Bahn train
