Trips from Heidelberg

This summer I will be staying with a friend who lives in Heidelberg. We wanted to do a small, cheap trip (2-3 days) to somewhere close by bus (or cheap train). We have already been to Munich, Stuttgart, Konstanz, Paris. Can you suggest any other interesting places?

Thank you for any tips/advice you can give me!

How about Würzburg? Beautiful old city with the Würzburg Residence, a palace, being UNESCO heritage site.

It takes 2 1/2 hours by regional trains(!) but a single ticket just costs 9 EUR. Bargain.

Some places you can inexpensively reach from Heidelberg with a Baden-Wuerttemberg day ticket (26€ for the both of you for unlimited public transportation within this state for a day only excluding fast long-distance IC, EC and ICE trains:

our favorite town in Germany, Tuebingen, just quintessential Germany

Basel, Switzerland

Strasbourg, France (for this destination you can only reach Kehl across the Ehine River from Strasbourg and then use cheap local transportation or a regional train)

With a car, there are many more excellent destinations easily reachable and you can easily see excellent more rural local sights.

a) places you can reach on VRN tickets

VRN day ticket is for 2 persons EUR 19,50. For destinations close to Heidelberg even less.

Here in first place Speyer and Würzburg (both with UNESCO world heritage sites). To Würzburg only the regional trains are covered (S1 to Osterburken from there by regional train). As Würzburg is already outside the VRN the trams and buses there are not covered by a VRN ticket.

But there are many more towns and other sights worth a visit. Here a brochure (in German) with suggestions (can be picked up at Heidelberg Hbf in printed form)

b) places you can reach on a Baden-Württemberg Ticket (EUR 26 for 2 persons)

marcopolko gave already some suggestions

Interesting are in first place 3 holiday regions: Black Forest, Swabian Alb and Lake Contance

c) places you can reach on a Rheinland-Pfalz Ticket (EUR 26 for 2 persons)

Is not valid directly from Heidelberg - but from Mannheim.

e.g. Middle Rhine Valley, Moselle Valley, Trier

Ladenburg is a 14-minute ride by direct train from Heidelberg's main station. It is included on page 96 in the VRN outings brochure abalada offered up. The place is adorable and makes a perfect short outing from H'berg.

Within an hour of Heidelberg are places like Speyer, Weinheim, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Frankfurt, 4 "Castle towns", Mosbach, Eberbach, Ladenburg.

Under two hours are the Alsace region of France (esp. Strasbourg), Baden-Baden and northern parts of Black Forest, Pfalz region, wine route.

These are all great suggestions! We've already been to Tuebingen and Lake Constance, both of which were beautiful! The Black Forest area, Würzburg and Strasbourg (France) sound nice! I am going to do some more research into those areas.

In the Black Forest area, I saw that there is hiking. I was wondering what type of trails are available? Is there a map of the trails somewhere?
