Freiburg/ Lucerne/ Basel/ lake Constance

We are a family of 4 and we booked our flight tickets for Zurich this July . We want to stay in Freiburg but we but we also want to visit other places as well. For example we want to go to Lucern, Lake Constance, Basel, Colmar and europa park ... Could you please advise us which is the best and cheapest way to go to these places ? Is it by car by train or by tour bus . Also for the train ticket (I know there are trains going to Lucern and Basel ) is there a special price for families going there for a day trip ?And can you advise which other places near Freiburg is worth going to ?

Your options will depend if you stay directly in Freiburg or a neighbouring town like e.g. Kirchzarten. Not in Freiburg, but in many other smaller places in this area you will receive a KONUS guest card

Basel can be reached on the KONUS card or a Baden-Württemberg Ticket. Baden-Württemberg Ticket is EUR 25 assuming your children are under 15 years old. Map what is covered by a Baden-Württemberg Ticket

Mini group 24 hours ticket "RegioElsassTicket" from Freiburg (and area) to Colmar is EUR 21,00.

Lake Constance and Lucerne are a lot closer to Zürich Airport than to Freiburg. While to Lake Constance you could travel on a Baden-Württemberg Ticket, I've no really good budget idea for a trip to Lucerne. With a rental car it's also a bit of a gamble if it will have already a vignette (toll sticker) for the Swiss autobahns or not (would add another CHF 40).

A few fun things the family might enjoy:

a ride through the Black Forest on a camel- http://www.kamelhof.de/index2.php only in German

a visit to an old underground Black Forest silver mine- http://www.bergwerk-neubulach.de/ only in German

a visit to an underground iron mine- http://www.frischglueck.de/ only in German

a small moated castle/palace, at Glatt- www.flickr.com/photos/destinatio/72402386/

a fairytale-like castle, Burg Hohenzollern by Hechingen- http://www.burg-hohenzollern.com

our favorite town in Germany, Tuebingen, just quintessential Germany, - http://www.tuebingen.de

a well-preserved medieval monastery by Tuebingen, Bebenhausen- in www.schloesser-magazin.de/en

the best preserved medieval monastery in Germany, Maulbronn- in www.schloesser-magazin.de/en

Germany's largest castle ruin by Singen, Hohentwiel- in www.schloesser-magazin.de/en

Europe's largest combination zoo-botanical garden in Stuttgart, Wilhelma- www.wilhelma.de

excellent Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de )- mercedes-benz-classic.com/content/classic/mp…

Vauban star fortifications in Neuf-Brisach, France- www.fortified-places.com/neufbrisach.html the church across the river in Breisach is also worth a stop

fortress Haut Koenigsbourg, near Selestat, France- http://www.haut-koenigsbourg.fr/en

any of the old towns along the Alsatian Wine Route between Obernai and Eguisheim, just one beautiful small town or village after another with well-kept old buildings, wineries, and flowers, much nicer than anything on the German side of the Rhine

I'll stop there as that is already much more than you have time for. Most of these may require a car or be easiest by car.

Thank you both for your immediate reply... We were thinking of staying in Freiburg but after you mentioned Kirchzarten I looked it up and it seems that it is a wonderful place (also less expensive)... So I think it would be better to stay outside Freiburg and move around with Public transportation than to lease a car ....

Thank you very much ..

greetings from cyprus
