a week in Freiburg in April

Thinking to spend a week in Freiburg and looking for accomodation and activity ideas.

We are family of 4 (mum, dad, 10 and 12 year old). Would like self catering accomodation - will be traveling by train so will need to be accessible on foot or by public transport. Any recommendations?

Also looking for ideas of things to do in Freiburg and around. Walks (not too strenuous), sights etc. Have read about bob-sled ride and Europa Park - any comments on these?

Also thinking about travelling back to UK by train from Freiburg via Paris - would this work or are there other better routes? If going through France, would like perhaps to stay overnight in French countryside on way so as to avoid expensive night in Paris. Have long journey back to north of Scotland once we get back to UK!

Thanks for any feedback you can give

I've also replied to your other post, and holiday accommodation information is given in those websites.

If your visit is in late April, the world's largest Spring beer festival ( www.stuttgarter-fruehlingsfest.de ) is in Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ) from 23Apr to 15May. Besides the large beer tents with entertainment, there are plenty of rides suitable for your children. Also, if your children are boys, they would definitely enjoy a visit to the world-class Mercedes Benz Museum with the 125 year history of the automobile and this brand on display in the form of 160 vehicles. This museum is simply loved by all visitors irregardless of age, gender or whether someone likes automobiles or not. Boys would definitely like the driving simulators, sitting behind the wheel of trucks and buses, and having their picture taken in a Formula-1 racer in the basement.

I would also recommend www.urlaub-bauernhof.de/index.shtml… as a good pace to find self-catering farmhouse accommodation in the Black Forest.

If you stay in the Black Forest proper, you will get a free Konus card when you fill in the form for "kurtax" visitor tax. The Konus card entitles your family to free train and bus transport within the whole Black Forest region for the duartion of your stay: http://www.blackforest-tourism.com/konus

Note the list of towns that give out the Konus card in this document http://www.etracker.de/lnkcnt.php?et=jYV6P3&lnkname=STG|KONUS-Flyer+2010+englisch.pdf&url=http://www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info/content/download/32323/301986/file/KONUS-Flyer%202010%20englisch.pdf . You won't get the Konus card if you stay in Freiburg.

Europa Park is definitely worth visiting. My favourite Sommeroldelbahn is the Hasenhorn in Todtnau.

The area is full of well-maintained walking routes: http://www.wanderservice-schwarzwald.de/

It is perfectly possible to travel by train to the Black Forest from Scotland via France. First of all, you should have a look at the Germany and France pages on http://www.seat61.com/. You could travel by train from the Black Forest via Strasbourg, and then through France by TGV.

Freiburg is great for location, too.

As I usually suggest, take a trip over to France (Alsace) for a day. It really is different, yet so near. Colmar is a popular destination fairly close to Frieburg. Maybe a boat ride on the canals there. Also "origin" of Statue of Liberty (sculptor was from Colmar).

You also can go down to Switzerland for a day, mostly Basel.

Use the DB timetable and check as means of transport "only local transport". KONUS card covers all local public transport: regional trains, the Breisgau S-Bahn, the trams in Freiburg and the buses.

Hi - still struggling with where we might stay in Freiburg region. Would like to be able to benefit from Konus card but finding it difficult to choose another town to stay in. Have checked out links but all info is in German - can read a bit of German but not this much.

We live on a farm in the country at home so would ideally like to be in a small town with some shops, cafes, things for kids to do. Would need to be somewhere with a railway station preferably.

Any suggestions?

I also posted on one of your other forum questions.

There is a commuter train between Freiberg and the larger villages in the Elz valley with bus connections to outlying villages. Most hotels and gasthauses will pick you up at the train stations so where ever you decide to stay ask if that service is available.

also something the kids might like to do is explore an old castle ruins The Hochburg ("high castle") is a castle near Emmendingen about 12 KMs north of Freiberg.

Many websites can be changed to English, often by clicking on the Union Jack flag or on ENG. If you cannot change the language, then your computer's browser should have a translation facility. Although translations are often pretty bad, hotel information is similar all over the world and for the most part should be understandable, even without that translation. If you are really interested in a few accommodations, click on their website or drop them an e-mail. If they can't reply to an e-mail in English, it might be better if you didn't stay there.

Also, I am leery of staying in a real rural area without a car, as public transportation in some such areas isn't that good. If that's the case, your KONUS cared will be of much less value.
