Baden-Baden for one day - how to get around and what to see

Hi, I am planning to arrive at Baden-Baden airport in the morning and spend half a day there. How much does it cost to get from the airport to the town? What sights are in a 'must see' list and how far are they from major public transport routes? Is there any regional ticket that would cover the public transport in the region?

Since Baden-Baden is so close to the border, is there any quick (and cheap) connection to any French town nearby?

Thanks a lot.

You can get by bus to the center of Baden-Baden. This should take less than an hour one way and involves generally at least one change of bus. There are usually several connection per hour. See www.kvv.de for details and look for the connection from "Airpark" to "Leopoldsplatz" (center of town).

You could then just walk around the center of Baden-Baden, enjoy the Thermal Spa (bus stop is "Caracalla-Therme") or use the cable car to go up the town's summit Merkur (bus stop is "Merkurwald"). There is a regional ticket for local public transport for less than 10 EURO a day.

Baden-Baden is closest to Strasbourg, less than a hour, and definitely worth it. Strasbourg is a mixture of picturesque medieval, canals, great restaurants, etc. and some baroque and modern in other parts of town.

Trains from Baden-Baden to Strasbourg run quite frequently, usually more than once an hour. Travel time from train station to train station is about 60 minutes with one change in "Appenweier". A single trip ticket with a regular train costs only 11,50 EURO (the Baden-Wuerttemberg ticket would not save you any money here anway). There are also some faster train connections with TGV or IC trains, which take only 30 minutes for the trip but these are more expensive.

Baden-württemberg Ticket covers however airport to Baden-Baden and than to Kehl and back within one day.

Kehl is just opposite the Rhine from Strasbourg.

You can either buy additionally point-to-point tickets Kehl - Strasbourg and stay seated in Kehl. Or change in Kehl to the Strasbourg (CTS) city bus #21.

A 24 hours ticket for the trams and buses in Strasbourg (and the 21 to/from Kehl) is EUR 4,00.

There is a version of this ticket for 2 or 3 persons called "24H TRIO" which is EUR 5,70.
