Black Forest Without A Car

Hi everyone!

My partner and I have one week to see the Black Forest in the beginning of September. We are traveling around Germany without a car, so we need a base (or two!) that has good transit links to the rest of the forest. At first I thought Freiburg, but it seems best to stay in the Black Forest so we can get the KONUS card and travel for free on buses & trains. We would like to see the cute towns and do some hiking.

So what would the best base be? Titisee? Triberg? I appreciate any advice you could give us!

Thank you!!

Kirchzarten which is a town just outside of Freiburg on the Hell Valley Railway Freiburg to Titisee (served half hourly).

Titisee is also OK but a bit touristy.

.

Triberg is less ideal as the town is not next to the train station. Gengenbach is a nice town on the Black Forest Railway also serving Triberg.

Gengenbach would be good.

It is a nice place to stay in its own right, it is at one end of a scenic rail route through the forest and it is very convenient for the nearby major rail junction at Offenburg so you can easily get connections to further destinations.

Thank you abalada & blawcleea! This is just the type of info I was looking for. I'll research the accommodations and surroundings of the towns you suggested and see which one fits best. THANK YOU!

Everything located near the "Höllentalbahn" would be fitting.

Kirchzarten and Himmelreich (-> Buchenbach) are located in the Dreisam valley, while Hinterzarten, Titisee, Neustadt and Löffingen are in the hills/mountains.

You will get Konus in all these places.

Best regards

Check out the trip reports by Bavaria Ben at his website www.bensbauernhof.com. The past few years he has really been 'Black Forest Ben' and used public transportation in the area
