My family will be visiting Germany next summer, and spending some time in the Black Forest region, re-tracing my maternal grandfather's roots. His family hails from Schmieh, which is near Bad Teinach I believe. Apparently, his family's old farm and home still stands: He left for America as a teenager as the gears of WW1 were cranking up, never to return.
This will be our first time in the area and am interested in any and all advice/tips on getting around, accommodation, things to see and do, what to expect, etc.
We're considering flying into either Zurich or Frankfurt, and taking the train into Stuttgart. From there, I'd assume a car hire would be in order to properly tour the BF region for a few days. Then, we plan to train it to Munich, and spend a couple of days there as well.
One party will probably leave back to the USA at that point, while I am considering staying a few extra days and seeing Salzburg (or Prague, if I can swing it) before heading to Zurich for the flight back to Miami. I am limited in which cities i can fly out of.
Another crazy idea, is to train it from Stuttgart to Paris and jump the Eurostar to London for a few days as well, then fly back from Heathrow. Has anyone done this run, and is it fairly easy?
Lots of questions, I know, and I apologize. But this board has never let me down before and I can really use some insight on planning this trip. :)
