Austria/ Germany border crossing at Salzburg
Save

Hi there,

I will be in Munich on a business trip next week and like to do a trip to Salzburg area with my rental car.

Did any of you folks cross the border from Salzburg towards Rosenheim/ Munich recently?

I´ve heard about custom check points?

Long waiting lines? Any suggestions about “detours” I could take to avoid long lines?

Thank you!

there are no such things as customs checkpoints! but there are checks on cars and lorries so as to control refugees. and yes, there may be some delays, but then again there may not be. nobody can forsee what the situation will be like from day to day.

My wife and I drove from.Garmish to Salzburg on Sept. 18th about 10:30 am the border into Germany was backed up for at least 2 miles. Returning at 5:30 that day it was only a 10 minute delay re-entering. It is a total unknown

I crossed from Germany into Austria at the Salzburg border on Sept 20, and the busses/cars were going right through. I crossed back from Salzburg into Germany yesterday September 26. We took a local Salzburg bus to Freilassing to then take the train to Munich. As of yesterday morning, the border was backed up with traffic and it took us about 30 minutes of waiting to get through. So really not bad in the scheme of things. There were many refugees standing and waiting at the border. From what I could tell, the cars were being stopped briefly and the police were asking a couple quick questions and letting them through. The police got on our bus and looked at everyone's passports before we continued through. Worst case, there will be traffic and they'll check your passport. I think the amount of traffic is really hard to determine ahead of time though. But Salzburg is so beautiful so I'd go if you can!

Possibly too late for your question now, but we were supposed to catch the CNL train from Muchich to Venice, but adB Bahn from Munich to Venice, which runs through Salzberg. DB Bahn has canceled all these trains, due to border control. We ended up catching a train through Innisberg way. Other people at the hotel we stayed at said going into Salzberg was ok by car or taxi, but coming back over the border took about 2 hours. They advised to lock your doors esp over the bridge which is a,to the border.

The reason is the refugees heard Germany would take them, but have now reduced the numbers they are allowing to enter. Munich train station was very busy with Oktoberfest patrons and refugees, and had a very big police presence.

The problem is that all the refugee camps in Germany are already over capacity, in a lot of places they put up tents to give them at least a dry bed, but now temps are already close to freezing in some parts of the country, so there have to be new places found and that's not easy.

Letting them in and then live on the street is not an option.

I came back across the border today on bus number 24 as the trains were still cancelled from Salzburg hbf. Trains were only running from Freilassing which is across the German border. There were no queues at 11.30 am (this may vary with the time of day)

Gemma, on the radio yesterday there was a 3km tailback at the border and I've heard of other times there being a 2hour delay. So indeed, it depends on the time of day.

I do find it amusing to see everyone get worked up about delays at the border which may or may not happen, when this specific road is notorious for traffic jams at the best of times meaning it was NEVER a road to plan a quick and painless journey on.

What are the current public transport options for this route?

Our night train Munich-Venice was cancelled last night, and we had crazy route to try to pick up train in Salzburg (which we missed by 20 minutes). We got about four hours notice from DB Bahn, which really wasn't acceptable. Right now transportation option is rail Munich-Freilassing, bus to Salzburg, then continue from there.
