Best place to see the Black Forest

We have planned a Europeon trip for next May with 8 days in Switzerland, 3 days in Germany & 4 in Amsterdam.

We will be heading into Germany from Basel & have booked 2 nights in Bacarach, but would like to spend a day/night in the black forest area on our way. I was thinking Freiburg. Would this be a good choice?? What is the best way to get there from Basel? We will probably have a Swiss Pass, is there any chance it will help with the cost to get us from Basel to Freiburg? If not what is the best method.

From Freiburg we will take the train to Bacarach, from Bacarach we are heading to Amsterdam, what is the best route to get us there.

1. Re: Best place to see the Black Forest

Freiburg ( www.freiburg.de ) is a city on the edge of the Black Forest ( www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info ), not in the mountains. My favorite place there is the outdoor museum Vogtsbauernhof ( http://en.vogtsbauernhof.de/ ) just to the south of Hausach where centuries-old large Black Forest farmhouses have been moved there from throughout the region. A train line from Offenburg will get you there, and along the way is the nice medieval town of Gengenbach ( www.gengenbach.de ). Continuing past Hausach is Schiltach ( www.schiltach.de ) near the crest of the mountains which is a nice more "typical" Black Forest small town. Unfortunately, much of the heavy forest of dark green ("black") evergreen trees has been logged off or destroyed by fairly recent storms with hurricane-force winds, so without a car it is difficult to experience this. As you are coming from the more scenic Alps in Switzerland, I would be mainly concerned with seeing cultural sights, not scenic one.

You can use a Baden-Wuerttemberg day train ticket which for 2 people will be 26€ from Basel (use a DB counter or machine) and which will allow unlimited use of public transportation in this German state on any means of local transportation (buses, trams, U-bahns, S-bahns, regional trains) from 9AM on weekdays and from midnight on weekends and holidays until 3AM the next day. Therefore you could stop and visit the cathedral in Freiburg before continuing on. Public transportation information can be found at www.bahn.com .

Freiburg is a nice city at the edge of the Black Forest

You can go from Freiburg to the Schauinsland mountain by cable car (tram + bus to the cable car valley station).

or by train (run half-hourly, travel time 35 minutes) to lake Titisee

from there you can proceed by bus to the Feldberg, the highest peak of the Black Forest (hourly, 25 minutes to Feldberger Hof)

Swiss Pass won't be of any use. Best deal for this is a Baden-Württemberg Ticket.

- covers all regional trains in the German federal state Baden-Württemberg and also to/from Basel SBB. If you won't stay near Basel SBB you may better travel by tram or bus to Basel Bad Bf train station as most regional trains into Germany start only from there.

Not covered are long distance trains like IC/EC or ICE.

- valid on weekdays past 9am, Sa or Su or on public holidays all day

- you can buy this online but also on spot. From the ticket machines (at least at Basel Bad Bf) or for EUR 2 more also at the counters (at either train station).

- covers also the trams and buses in Freiburg, the trains to Titisee, the buses to the Feldberg

DB timetable

Start: Basel SBB

Start: Basel Bad Bf

Destination: Freiburg(Breisgau)Hbf

Destination: Schauinslandbahn-Talstation, Horben

Destination: Titisee-Neustadt Titisee

Destination: Feldbergerhof (1250m), Feldberg (Schwarzwald)

and select as means of transport "only local transport" if you plan to travel on a Baden-Württemberg Ticket. Some timetables might be not yet online for May. Use more recent dates to get an idea.

The route Basel - Freiburg - Bacharach - Amsterdam is largely along the Rhine. Assuming you won't stay for more than 48 hours at Bacharach you can buy one discounted special from Freiburg to Amsterdam. You can (and should) buy this at earliest 92 days before departure to get the best price.

DB timetable

Start: Freiburg(Breisgau)Hbf

Destination: Amsterdam Centraal

and add Bacharach as a stopover with the duration of the stopover in hh:mm

Via (1): Bacharach

You may have to play a bit around with the stopover duration until you have the connections you like.

3. Re: Best place to see the Black Forest

I'm traveling to black forest during winter (in mid December). I planned to stay 2 nights at Freiburg. I have 2 full day to explore Black Forest. Where are the best place to visit during this winter period? Can I still visit the waterfall during winter? Or any other suggestion?? Thanks.
