Public holidays in Germany - What is open?

I just realized that it's a public holiday on May 20, 2013. We will arrive in Berlin on Saturday, May 18th in the afternoon. My plan was to go to Potsdam on Sunday morning and then to Classic Car Remise in the afternoon since it is open on Sundays. Will it still be open on Sunday if Monday is a holiday? What is open and closed on Monday?

Shops are closed in Germany on Sundays and public holidays.

Many museums are closed on Mondays, but stay however open if this is a public holiday.

Classic Remise Berlin is open on Sundays and public holidays from 10 am till 8 pm. Thus they will be open on both days.

That's ambitious for one day.

Thanks abalada!

So the museums that are normally closed would be open if it falls on a public holiday.

Re Potsdam - you think it will take more than half a day? We will only be in Berlin for 4 days so we want to maximize our time and check out all the tourist sites.

Some. Not all. This must be checked with each museum individually.

Hi! Will shops in Viktualien Market, Marienplatz, Odeonplatz and Maximilian street be open on 20th May 2013 since it's a public holiday?

They will of course be closed because it's a public holiday - as we said above. A few tourist souvenir shops might be open, but all others stay closed. It's the law, not their decision.

Again: This law applies to THE WHOLE OF GERMANY. That includes, obviously, also Hamburg. And any other location in this country that you guys may want to enquire about.

Thanks for the quick response and I'm sure we all sound like idiots asking the same question. Its just so different than the States and different "states" have different rules too.

Is there a website or special phrase that would let us know if a mall or retailer will be open on a particular holiday or Sunday? =)

There is this website but only in German (but google translate may help)

http://www.verkaufsoffenesonntage.info

In Hamburg shops are only allowed four times per year to open on Sundays (next time on 16th June) but never on the Advent Sundays
