Wildflecken

I am planning to visit Wildflecken in Sept and was wondering how to get there from Frankfurt.

My husbands polish/russian parents were there during the war, my sister in law born there.

Thankyou

Wildflecken is no more served by trains. But you can go there by train + bus. Depending on the route you can buy still "train tickets" to Wildflecken which include the bus. A car gives you in this area however a far greater flexibility.

From: Frankfurt

To: Rathausplatz, Wildflecken

To: Frankenplatz, Wildflecken-Oberwildflecken

Best know attraction near Wildflecken is the Kreuzberg. The holy mountain of the Franconians. And with an outstanding monastery brewery. Which does both not exclude each other.

The Rhön Mountains are a hidden gem of the beaten paths. E.g. the Red and Black Moor.

Has however the disadvantage that not much information is available in English.

But you could mail them and ask for further information. Interestingly often more printed information is available in English than online.

The camp is not shown on the map of Wildflecken I linked above.

Here a map where you can see the former camp (today called Rhönkaserne (Röhn Barracks) or Neuwildflecken).

Don't know if you can nowadays access this area or a part of it. The Polish cemetery there was however also in the past outside of the fence and accessible.

Thankyou for that information and the websites. I will take a look. It sounds like a car may be the best option to have a really good look around the area.

I'm delighted that you chose to post your inquiry on Wildflecken and travel to get there. I hope you enjoy your visit/tour. My Polish parents were also in the camp and I was born there. I too am planning to visit my birth place sometime in 2012. You're inquiry has helped me to get more current information on Wildflecken and I thank you for that.

Use a route planner like

http://www.viamichelin.com

The estimated travel times are pretty accurate.

Not sure if you can visit the camp at all as it is nowadays used as barracks of the German Army. You may ask the community of Wildflecken on this.
