Train to Lucerne

Hi All,

I'm soon going on a Scandinavian train tour. It ends up in Hamburg, before railing back to London. I would like to extend my holiday by spending 6 nights in Switzerland. I thought probably Lucerne. I have the opportunity of hopping off my return train at Cologne, Brussels or go right back to London. Which would be the best place to catch a train to Lucerne?

I then need to fly to Melbourne. I haven't got a ticket yet so which would be the most economical airport in Europe to fly out of that's somewhere near Switzerland?

Cologne would be an option to change towards Lucerne. Would allow you also to travel through the Middle Rhine Valley - one of the most scenic routes Germany has to offer.

DB timetable

From: Cologne

To: Luzern

Via: Koblenz (to enforce the Middle Rhine route)

In first place you should check for flights from Zürich. Next close airports with intercontinental flights are Munich, Frankfurt and Paris.

The nearest airports are Zurich. Frankfurt and Munich. You could search on Kayak, Expedia or other consolidator for ideas of routes and prices and then see what the airlines can offer. A ticket bought directly with the airline means you can deal directly with the airline in case of problems. Otherwise you get a third party involved who are often not helpful

Zurich is by far the closest large airport. Then Milan, and then Munich and Frankfurt. There are many other airports that are closer to Lucerne, but then you would definitely have to make connections at another European airport for a flight to Australia.
