Help with itinerary for 10 nights in Germany

Help TA Germany forum,

I asked a previous question a few days ago about traveling with kids, I still need help and am hoping for some input. I have been really having a hard time narrowing down what to see/ where to stay.

We (family of 5- kids are 8,12 and 14) are flying into Munich for 10 nights in late March, flying out of Frankfurt. Suggestions on a good itinerary, and I guess we should just try to have 2 bases for 5 nights each? Opinions?

I lived in Germany for 3 yrs previously, my husband as well but he did not travel as much as I was able to, so we are open to most anything.

Thank you.

That is a rather vague question. What's on your bucket-list? What are things you enjoy doing together as a family?

Well nothing really on the bucket list, we are open to most anything. Originally I had thought about 2nights in Munich and 3 in Fussen, 1 in Rothenberg and and 3 or 4 in Heidelberg or Trier. No need to do much in Frankfurt other than maybe a museum.

We like historical areas, outdoor areas, nature, interesting sites, etc. We will be renting a car. Thanks.

"...historical areas, outdoor areas, nature, interesting sites, etc"

The great outdoors normally isn't too great yet at the end of March (the travel period you indicated on your previous thread.)

You can get a good look at local history in the Bavarian town of Bad Windsheim. This outdoor museum has an interesting collection of buildings from the region where you can really see how the locals lived. (In March, it's closed on Mondays.)

Bad Windsheim isn't far from Rothenburg, Würzburg and Nuremberg. This would be a good area for one travel base over several days.

Maybe you could stay on a working farm. This one in Iphofen has apartments for a family the size of yours and would be well located for visits to the towns mentioned above. Iphofen is a gorgeous little wine town with an old town wall - see second link and scroll down for photos. (You'll find other towns in this region with farm stay possibilities as well.)

Since Heidelberg is in your sights, you could base in that area for a few days before heading to FRA airport. From the Rothenburg/Bad Windsheim area, spend a day following the Castle Road west and seeing whatever interests you:

From your Heidelberg base you could visit the Neckar River Valley towns, the Begstrasse towns, and Speyer, for starters...
