Tour du Mont Blanc in October

Hello everyone,

We are a couple in our 30's and were planning on doing the tour but we canot make time until the beginning of October. As I see the season for the tour is June-August, is it possible/recommended to do it in October?

Our main concern is the weather but if there is anything else that might be problematic because of the season we would like to know.

We also had in mind the possibility of doing only part of the TMB (maybe only east/west or skipping certain areas) because of the season.

Thanks in advance, your advise is much appreciated.

The weather can be anything rain, sun , snow, warm cold etc etc.

You might consider basing yourselves in Chamonix or one of the other villages in the valley and doing different routes each day as I do not think that the refuges are all open.

Thank you redzed1,

Do you think it is even possible (or recommended) to do the whole (or part of) the tour, in case that accommodation is not an issue? Our main concern is safety and thus are worried about the weather since I see everywhere that the season ends mid September.

I think I would do a section a day or two a day depending on length.

The transport up and down the valley is working so getting back to your accommodation is just a matter of timing.

What to do is dependent upon the weather. The forecasts a pretty accurate up to 3 or 4 days. So you can plan your itinerary.

I would be wary of walks above 2000m but if the forecast is good then you should be OK.

It is a fantastic time to walk the region as it is quiet and there is always a good chance of seeing a lot of wildlife. Just be careful as there are not a lot of people about.

It's possible to do the TMB in October but, as mentioned, the weather may not be in your favour so I would advice that you come prepared to change your plans on a day-by-day basis. Having said that, October around Mont Blanc often has long periods of fine, sunny weather and we have clients on the route early and mid October.

The mountain huts will have closed but if you plan your route so that you stop overnight in the villages along the tour, you can find accommodation (Chamonix, Les Houches, Les Contamines, Les Chapieux, Courmayeur, La Fouly, Champex, Trient, Argentiere).

Good luck!

Mark
