We will be visiting Chamonix in early August (never been there before). The town looks very fun in a touristy sort of way (saw on a TV show), but I'm not sure if we should stay in the town of Chamonix or one of the nearby villages. I like a bit of action, restaurants, shops, etc. However, at night I also like peace and quiet and am not interested in night life at all--unless it involves sitting in bed and reading a good book.
We are a family of 5 with 3 teens and would like to find an apartment with plenty of space for a good price. Our plans are to visit the town of Chamonix, ride the lifts, picnic, hike, and possibly paragliding. Is it better to stay in town or nearby? What are the nearby towns like? We will have a car, so transportation is not an issue.
I visited Zermatt years ago, and I loved that town. Is Chamonix similar?
