Where to overnight between Paris and south of France - Lyon?

Hi, I'm looking for suggestions of towns or specific hotels for our family of 5 to break our journey from Disneyland Paris to Nice.

We'll be leaving Disneyland at some stage on the first Friday of July and driving with our three young children to the south of France. Google maps puts the total driving time at just over 9 hours, so we'd prefer to break it up over two days. Looking on the map, Lyon seems to be right in the middle, but I don't really know anything about it, and a quick search for accommodation makes it seem like city centre hotels will be quite expensive for what will be a brief stop in the middle of our holiday.

All suggestions welcome - thanks!

Stop one night in lower Burgundy; our usual choice is the Château d'Igé, as it's very nice and not far off the autoroute. The kids can run around in the grounds and wear off some energy after a long car trip.

For the next night, skip Lyon (time-consuming to get into the city and back out again) and stay in Valence at the Novotel. There's a pool and a restaurant, and I believe the hotel offers family rooms.

Agree very much that it's best to skip Lyon. It's just too much stress for an overnighter. Stay somewhere North of Lyon or to the South. The A7motorway does get very busy and Lyon is a bit of a bottleneck.

Not sure if you are talking about one overnight stop or two. If just one then your best bet is to stay near the motorway and be ready to go the next day.

With a family of five you are almost certain to need two rooms. Look at the accorhotels chain for conveniently situated hotels:

www.accorhotels.com

Their cheapest chain is Formule1 which has rooms that sleep up to 3 but there is no private bathroom. Ibis Budget (formerly Etap) also sleeps 3 per room with own basic shower room.

Or you could look for bed and breakfast accommodation and non-chain hotels, but just make sure it doesn't take you too far off your route. This website specialises in accommodation for large families of 5 or more but you need to do a bit of work to see which fits your journey:

Or you could skip all that driving and just take the TGV to Provence from Paris (or CDG).

Lyon is a fabulous city...but not for an overnight.

Thanks for the advice, the Novotel in Valence didn't seem to have availability, but we've found a resort type place near Valence and have booked a two bedroom apartment. Good to know about the potential traffic too - our destination is actually just over the border in Italy, so we will maybe check some alternative routes if it seems going via Nice will be busy.

Thanks again.
