Marseille Airport to Avignon

Would it be better to get a cab for two adults from the Marseille airport to Avignon? If you take the bus to the train station (1 euro each?) and then the train (about 17 euros each) and then a taxi in Avignon to the hotel (maybe 10 euros) it would seem to be cheaper and only one bag drag at the airport.

You could also rent a car. If you are going to explore Provence using Avignon as your base, having a car is a great advantage to do day trips.

We are actually going to Avignon to stay for a day before we board our Viking ship for a river cruise. We won't need a car in Avignon as we are staying in the old part of town within walking distance to most everything. So getting from the Marseille airport to Avignon is our first order of business. With camera bags and suitcases going by bus, then train, then taxi to our Avignon hotel seems awkward. We thought a taxi might be easiest. Has anyone done this lately?

A taxi will be in the range of 170 euros (no tip) from the Marseille airport into the centre of Avignon.

The train (use the TER train from Marseille) into the center of Avignon is more of a hassle but way cheaper, you can take the shuttle bus from the airport into St Charles Station and go from there to Avignon.

You don't have to go to St. Charles to take a train from Marseille airport to Avignon. You can if you like, but it isn't necessary and it is going the opposite direction to your destination.

You can purchase a train ticket(s) at the Marseille airport from Vitrolles Station to Avignon Centre Ville. Your train ticket will include the cost of the shuttle from the airport to the Vitrolles train station (5 to 7 minutes drive). The train from Vitrolles can take anywhere from 58 minutes to 1 hour 25 depending on which train you take (the longer trains have more stops, different route). The cost is under 17 euros per person, per journey.

A taxi will in fact cost somewhere in the vicinity of 200 euros, probably more and that is one way not round trip. The gas and autoroute costs are 50 euros each way (for a private car), on their own. I make this trip all the time, so a taxi will cost considerably more.

The train is much simpler and stress free. If you arrive on a weekday, during rush hour, traffic on this route (Marseille to Avignon autoroute) can be an absolute nightmare.
