First time in Nice.... HELP!!

Hi, I'm going to Nice with my girlfriend in april for 5 nights and was wondering is there one main area where all the nice restuarants are and trendy bars are located?

I have got tickets for the monte carlo tennis masters so were going through to there one day and possibly spending a night out there for a really nice meal and visit to the grand casino on our last night. Whats the best option for travelling through to there on a day and on a night time, i've heard they do a great bus service with stunning views but does this run till late at night?

the last thing and most important thing is I am looking at propsing to my girlfriend whilst i'm there but im unsure as to do it in nice or in monte carlo, what do people recommend and where in nice / monaco

Thanks :)

HI Robbie

First with the good news: Monaco is 20 minutes by train and 3 euros and 70 cents each way ! Just go to the national railway website (www.sncf.fr)

Planning: most people really enjoy Eze and Saint Paul de Vence, both of which you can access by local bus (bus lines website: http://www.lignesdazur.com/ri/?rub_code=4). Both are incredibly quaint villages and, well, romantic locations.

If you can't be bothered to go out of the city center, not to worry: walking around the old town, or getting on one of the tour buses should give you plenty of options.

In Nice most interesting restaurants are in the triangle Victor Hugo/Alphonse Karr - Place Garibaldi - Franck Pilatte, really the center with old town and port-area. For a good restaurant consult the "Guide Gantié" of which the 2012 version can be found online. Don't worry, all the good restaurants are still there.

For a trendy bar you have to stay in Monaco.

Proposing - good question. I could think of a few places, especially in/around Monaco but most outdoors and at sunset it might be too cold outside. And "the" place for it (outdoor restaurant) is only open in July/August. Day or night? Restaurant, outdoor, public-place, view?

what says romance for you and your girlfrined? everyone has a different idea so do either of you have any particular interests ? eg history, boats, nature, views , art etc

Getting to monaco is easy by bus 100 or train. return by train or Night bus N100 on thursday friday saturday and the night before a french public holiday.

I would pick the terrace of the Chateau de la Chevre D'Or in Eze village. Even better if you could afford to spend a night there.

Yes, that was also my first idea for a "fine dining" location. But for a romantic candlelight diner it will be too cold. However, its still a two-star restaurant in a breathtaking place. A bus ride home would somehow spoil the occassion indeed, so a stay there is obligatory.

Thanks for the replies,

I am now considering a really nice meal or even a stay at the Chateau De La Chèvre D'or, I would never have came across that place so thanks again it's give me plenty to think about.

Is it possible to get a taxi from the Eze village or is it reliant on a bus service?

If taking a scenic bus ride home spoils the romance of the proposal and a 2 michelin starred restaurant dinner , they aren't worth marrying IMO.

There are 2 taxis - one for eze village and one for eze bord de mer. . you need to book well in advance being aware that taxis in france often deal with hospital/medical for 80-95% of their journeys and often take poeple for dialysis at night/evening

Chateau de la Chevre D'Or in Eze village. If you can afford to stay there, the taxi ride will be the cheapest part

If a lunch is not out of the question you should have it warm enough to sit out as well as a much better view ( not just a lot of lights). I see from their own Chevre d'Or website there is a special 'gift box' offer for lunch for two.

But there will be no candles then and - main problem - he certainly has to book in advance. And in April Eze-Village can well be within a rain clould. Would be a gamble. I would contact the hotel what lead time they need. A stay of more nights would reduce the risk.

Bus ride after: somewhat "The Graduate" but remember their faces ;)

Maybe "on the spur of the moment" would be easier to handle than the planned attack (and cheaper). Like "alone with the sea"? (sorry, no sunset over the sea at the Cote d'Azur).

Or take her by surprise in a bus line, or so. :)
