Best Way to Get From Nice to La Spezia

Good Day

I am with a group of 4 who are renting a car from Nice Airport and exploring Nice and the surrounding areas for 3 days/nights before heading to La Spezia to explore Cinque Terre for one day and flying out of Milan.

My question is regarding the most economical way for 4 to get from Nice to the train station in La Spezia as opposed to keeping the car that we rented in Nice and dropping it off there. The drop off fees from France to Italy are over 200 euro plus daily fee/gas/insurance/etc. We can always rent a car in La Spezia and drop it off at Milan airport so our main concern was how to get to Nice to La Spezia without using a rental car and in a fashion that doesn't make us lose alot of day time and cost too much.

Thank you in advance.

By train you would need two changes, at Ventimiglia and Genoa. Train from Nice to Ventimiglia is a local regional train that has frequent stops. From Ventimiglia you can catch faster trains, or once again use the local regional trains.

I'd recommend heading to Sestri Levant rather than La Spezia and grabbing a train from there to Cinque Terre: you're not back-tracking that way.

Unfortunately the trip from Nice to Cinque Terre takes around 6 hours.

Use the Italian railways web site to look for trains from Ventimiglia to the CT village that you are heading for. The main line along the coast goes through the Cinque Terre, so you would go through all the villages to get to La Spezia.

If you choose Monterosso as your first stop, you may not need to change to a local train.

What does 'one day' mean for your visit to the Cinque Terre? One day or a day and a night?

And is your flight from Milan the same day or the next morning? Or, preferably, very much later?

I am wondering if this trip is realistic.

Thank you for your ideas. I will look these up now. Unfortunately our trip is very short. We have only the one morning/day/night to get from Nice to La Spezia and walk through Cinque Terre. We would leave the next afternoon and drive to Milan. That is why we were hoping to get to La Spezia as fast as possible so as not to lose any more time than necessary.

Thanks again

That's a realistic timetable, just about, though hardly ideal.

If you are staying in Milan overnight and flying the next morning, you might well find it more relaxing to forget the car. There are direct trains from Monterosso in the Cinque Terre to Milan which take three hours, usually slightly faster than driving non-stop, and certainly less hassle. Taking the train would avoid the difficulties of driving and parking in Milan, and the time spent dropping off your car at the airport.

As stated in an earlier post, you do not normally need to go to la Spezia if going by train.

And if you really must have a car the whole time, la Spezia is also probably not the best place to rent it. Hertz at Alassio train station would probably give you the fastest journey time to the Cinque Terre. Avis and Sixt in San Remo or Europcar in Savona are also possible, but rental agencies in these towns are not next to the train station (and nor are they in la Spezia).
