Bastille Day in Nice

Hi everybody,

I just realized one of my 3 full days in Nice will be Bastille Day.

Questions:

- do markets, pharmacies, public monuments close?

- does public transportation (bus/train) stop working that day?

- where could I find a calendar of even in and around town?

Thanks

(Tsk tsk, its La Fête Nationale, only les rosbifs refer to it as Bastille Day)

It functions like all public holidays in France, which are numerous, transport operating a Sunday service. If you check out timetables of buses and trains online you will find they have separate timetables for Sundays and holidays, which is a scaled down version of weekdays for example, four buses an hour becomes three an hour.

What opens and closes? Usual French compromise - somethings open, somethings don't. There is no "rule" except "touristy" things are always open, except when they are not.

Its a fabulous day, which will kick off with various military displays down the front capped with a team of mirage jet fighters doing a low pass. The Sapeur Pompiers will get a good round of applause.

Usually there's a big free concert also down the front, with one of the best firework displays you will ever see. The Nice Tourist office is online and may have a timetable, otherwise buy the daily Nice Matin - everything of any importance is listed. Or just show up on the Prom and follow the crowds

If you are still there on the 17th July, you have a once in a lifetime opportunity to catch (in my case, to miss ) Earth Wind and Fire opening the Nice Jazz Festival

markets will be open if its not a monday [its wednesday so you are ok]

shops are variable in whether they close ot not---chains will probably be shut small touristy shops will be open - supermarkets etc will be shut in the afternoon definitely and some will be open in the morning.

most pharmacies will likely be shut but there is a 24hr pharmacy at the top of ave jean medecin plus other pharmices who open in a rota at weekends and public holidays and night.

there are no ervents listed for the 14th yet
