Which would you choose for a day trip - Nice or St Tropez? How about Marseille?

From where? Knowing where you're departing from would help in giving you some feedback, because of the logistics involved.

Nice would be my preferred city, certainly, but it isn't sensible for a day trip from Avignon. You can be in Marseille in about 30 mins. To go to Nice, you'll have to change trains, and the journey will take 3 1/2 - 4 hours each way.

there are direct trains from Avigon to Nice (so no need to change trains); on the other hand it is a long train ride... the fastest trains (TGV) would make the trip in 3.5 hours. I would not enjoy 7 hours of train riding on the same day to have a look at Nice.

Nice would be my choice but not worth it unless you can stay at least one night.

If it's only for the one day, Marseilles is your best bet, Nice 2nd choice and no St-Trop for train ride.

I've read so many conflicting reports about Marseille. Is it worth visiting?

You might consider a day trip to St Remy or/and Les Baux. You could do both in one day and they are charming little towns. They are not far from Avignon. You could take a bus tour to do.

I cannot comment on Marseille as I only passed thru.
